Sergeant Patrick Hart spoke calmly into the receiver. Honey, Im not coming home, he told his wife, Jill. Its okay, Im with friends. Ill contact you in a few days. And then he hung up the phone.
Jill Hart sat dumbfounded in the couples Fort Campbell, Kentucky home, knowing she was supposed to pick up Pat from the Clarksburg Greyhound station later that day. Hes such a practical joker, she thought after a while, hes probably coming home early to surprise me with Ozzfest tickets or something like that.
But Pat Hart wasnt joking, and he didnt come home, not that night or the next. As it turned out, he was 800 miles away, in another country, where in two days he would officially be AWOL from the United States Army.

I feel sorry for her. She probably didn't know she was marrying a coward and a deserter. Hopefully she can get a divorce and move on with her life. No sense being married to a felon and a traitor.
Looks to me like she joined him in Toronto.
Meanwhile, far braver men continue fighting for the freedom Hart enjoys.
Wow, he gave his son a lot to be proud of.
Yes, my daddy is a gutless coward
Pulling kids out of the grills of humvee's
If we were the evil nation this guy makes us out to be, he'd have already been shot by the death squad.
canada - send him back
us army - send him to leavenworth, and have him make little rocks for about 30 yrs, them send him to n korea. better yet, just send him to n. korea.
I would say good ridance, but he'll be back. When the next 'rat president takes office he'll pardon them all just like Jimmah Carter did. He and all the other traitors/cowards like him will be welcomed by the libs as heroes.
P.O.S.
Did you use the word "Hart" intentionally? A "hart" is an old English word for "deer". Brave Deer. Hmmmm. Well, most deer run from the predators.
19 and a half years in... and now he deserts?
there's something else going on here...
But: Consider the source.
I really can't imagine what I'd do if my husband pulled this kind of thing. Luckily, I'll never have to worry about it.
9 1/2 years, not 19 1/2....
That lady's head isn't screwed on quite right. It seems like everything she did, she did to advance her own standing vis-a-vis the career of her "hero" husband. And now that he's a deserter, she's jumping into the "war resister" lifestyle with just as much gusto. While I'm glad this "sergeant" is out of my Army and sucking at the teat of Canada's welfare system (sorry, guys!), it irks me that he will probably evade justice. And I'm sure he has no intention of repaying his reenlistment bonus....
There are other American desertersalthough war resisters is the preferred termcurrently living in Toronto. Two of them, Jeremy Hinzman and Brandon Hughey, have already applied for refugee status but were denied at their hearing last March. The ruling made very clear who qualifies for refugee status, and it seems that doesnt include war resisters. Heres what the ruling said: I find that the claimants are not [Geneva] Convention refugees, as they have not established that they have a well-founded fear of persecution for a [Geneva] Convention ground in the US. I also find that they are not persons in need of protection, in that their removal to the US would not subject them personally to a risk to their lives or to a risk of cruel and unusual treatment or punishment, and in that there are no substantial grounds to believe that their removal to the US will subject them personally to a danger of torture.
Hinzman and Hughey have appealed their case in Canadas federal court, however, and nobody expects an official ruling on the appeal for months. Theres a strong possibilityor at least a strong hope among the community of war resisters and antiwar activiststhat a parliamentary provision will be made in the near future, either changing the criteria for who can claim refugee status or simply allowing American military defectors to file for Canadian citizenship.
If no such provision is made, and Hinzman and Hughey lose their appeal, the Harts arent sure what theyll do. If they go back to the US, Pat faces 30 years in federal prison. Theres always the possibility of trying another country, but none of the Harts have passports. I really havent given it much thought, Pat says. Ive got a positive feeling about his appeal in federal court.
