Unrest in Pakistan Setback for Terror War

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan -- A week of unprecedented urban fighting in the wild tribal belt of North Waziristan has left scores dead and forced thousands to flee their homes, raising the stakes in Pakistan's war on Islamic militancy along the Afghan border.

A jumbled alliance of foreign militants, local tribesmen and Islamic students eager for jihad have stepped up resistance in a region where the army already claims to have wiped out al-Qaida as a viable fighting force.

The unrest, brewing for months, is a setback to the U.S.-led war on terror. Further hampering that effort are deteriorating relations between Pakistan and Afghanistan over Afghan claims that Taliban leader Mullah Omar is hiding in Pakistan and suicide bombers are training here.

Terrorism ruled out as towns probe water supply break-in

Residents stocked up on bottled water and wondered where they would shower Tuesday, after someone broke into the area's water supply facility and left behind a 5-gallon container that had an odor.

Ed Coletta, a spokesman for the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection, said the container was found on top of a 1.3 million-gallon tank that supplies water to Blackstone and the neighboring community of North Smithfield, R.I.

Authorities have ruled out terrorism, and the FBI has decided not to pursue the case, Dr. David Gifford, director of the Rhode Island Health Department, said Tuesday at a news conference.

Officials were unsure whether the empty bucket they found belonged to the water supply company that uses the facility. It was clear, however, that someone did force their way into the water tank.

The DEP issued a statement warning residents they should not "ingest or have the water contact their skin, and should not wash clothes or dishes; flushing of toilets is permissible" until given further notice. =====

Sarpy County Sheriff's Deputies Poisoned
~Neb.

Two Sarpy County Sheriff's Deputies were apparently intentionally poisoned with methamphetamine in their food. Sarpy County Sheriff Jeff Davis tells KPTM that the deputies became sick after eating food at an area restaurant last week. He also says that one tested positive for methamphetamine today. Three deputies were eating at that restaurant, two of the deputies were in uniform at the time.

The deputies have recovered, and weren't seriously hurt. An investigative team made up of other agencies outside Sarpy County is tracking leads in the case. Sheriff Davis did tell KPTM that appears the poisoning was intentional.

WASHINGTON — Nuclear materials from Soviet warheads that once threatened U.S. cities are now helping to light them up.

With little fanfare, U.S. utilities have been buying uranium that once sat in Soviet nuclear weapons to fuel civilian nuclear power reactors. The program supplies half the uranium used by U.S. nuclear plants which, in turn, generate 20% of all U.S. commercial power. That means, essentially, that one in every 10 light bulbs in America is powered by uranium that once sat atop a Russian missile.

The New York Times has an important and rightly terrifying piece about the dangers posed by the rail transport of deadly chemical gasses in and around our most densely populated cities. A terrorist attack on a single rail car full of chlorine could kill as many as 100,000 people. But our urban rail yards are unguarded. The Times reporter "spent 10 minutes driving along a rail bed beside cars holding toxic chemicals without being challenged, or even approached, by railroad employees" -- this in a depot 7 miles from Manhattan.
