Scientists Generate Unimaginable Heat in Lab Experiment
Friday, March 10, 2006
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. A particle accelerator at Sandia National Laboratories has heated a swarm of charged particles to a record 2 billion degrees Kelvin, a temperature beyond that of a star's interior.
Scientists working with Sandia's Z machine said the feat also revealed a new phenomenon that could eventually make future nuclear fusion power plants smaller and cheaper to operate than if the plants relied on previously known physics.
"At first, we were disbelieving," said Chris Deeney, head of the project. "We repeated the experiment many times to make sure we had a true result and not an 'Oops!'"
Sandia's experiment, which held up in tests and computer modeling in the 14 months since it was first done, was outlined in the Feb. 24 edition of Physical Review Letters. The authors also presented a theoretical explanation of what happened by Sandia consultant Malcolm Haines, a physicist at Imperial College in London.
The achievement will not mean fusion in the near future, but it's another step toward that goal, said Neal Singer, a Sandia spokesman.
Sandia's Z machine, housed in a warehouse-sized laboratory, is designed to generate tremendous amounts of energy. It normally passes 20 million amps of electrical current through a cluster of tungsten wires about the size of a spool of thread. The massive electrical pulse instantly vaporizes the wires into a cloud of charged, superhot particles known as plasma...
Welcome Cindy
Ian...thanks for the wonderful new thread. You time and creativity is greatly appreciated. Major congratulations on the new amazing D.C. Brookings Inst. position.
Thanks for the detailed outlines you create...just a great way to keep so much info. organized. I refer back to it many times during our threads.
We had emergency broadcast tests this week on TV in West Texas. The first time I've heard them in a long time.

Same crummy photos though.
He's such a jerk.
OPINION: Real manly guys with huevos expose their faces instead of hiding behind a bandana. What does this guy have to hide if he's serious? Well, thinking out loud, maybe "he" is really a girly boy or a female trying to look boyish.
Another ROP attack - in Thailand. A fellow Muslim, maybe he wasn't gung ho enough.

Title:
TERRORIST LEADER CAPTURED-WANTED FOR ASSASSINATIONS, MURDERS AND INTIMIDATION
Release Date:
3/10/2006
Release Number:
06-03-01PP
Description:
BAGHDAD, Iraq Coalition and Iraqi forces captured a leading insurgent terrorist Dec. 27, and he is believed to be responsible for many Iraqi and Coalition Forces deaths, assassinations as well as assassination attempts on government officials and intimidation of Iraqi citizens. Ramsi Ahmed Ismael Muhammed, aka Abu Qatada, was apprehended in a raid on his home in southern Baghdad. He was found hiding in a nearby canal.
Since his capture, Abu Qatada has provided critical information that has led to the capture of several of his terrorist associates. Coalition Forces believe additional information from Abu Qatada will lead to the eventual capture of terror cell leaders.
Born in Syria, Abu Qatada led a terror cell known as the Islamic Front for the Liberation of Iraq, an organization linked to improvised explosive device attacks on Coalition and Iraqi Forces that led to the deaths of several service members, attacks on police forces, the assassinations of two Iraqi government council members and harassment and intimidation of local Iraqis. His terror cell is also the primary suspect in the murders of several truck drivers in order to use their vehicles in VBIED attacks against Coalition and Iraqi forces.
Coalition and Iraqi forces view Abu Qatadas capture as significant not only because of the leadership role he played in the IFLI, but because of his ties to one of the most wanted men in Iraq, Muhammed Hilah Hammad Ubaydi, aka Abu Ayman. Abu Qatada is believed to be a top associate of Abu Ayman, the former aide to the Chief of Staff of Intelligence during the Saddam Hussein regime.
Abu Ayman has been a fugitive since the fall of the regime and is the prime suspect in the kidnapping and killing of several hostages in Iraq and IED attacks on Coalition and Iraqi forces. Abu Ayman, with Abu Qatadas assistance, has committed some of the most lethal attacks on Coalition and Iraqi forces and on Iraqi citizens since the fall of the regime.

BAGHDAD, Iraq - U.S. and Iraqi forces detained eight suspected insurgents early Saturday, four of them at a west Baghdad mosque identified by the U.S. military as a possible safe haven for al-Qaida in Iraq.
Forces surrounded the Sunni al-Khayr mosque complex in the violence-plagued Khadhra neighborhood late Friday. Police heard gunfire from the area, but when they found U.S. and Iraqi military at the scene, they withdrew, said police 1st Lt. Thayer Mahmoud.
Iraqi forces led the joint operation and discovered several rooftop fighting positions, AK-47s and Molotov cocktails, the U.S. military said in a statement.
The other four suspects were detained at other sites raided during the operation, the military said.
The eight are suspected of kidnapping, manufacturing car bombs, and financing and supporting terrorists, the military said.
No further details were provided.

30 Militants Killed in Pakistani Assault
AP on Yahoo ^ | 3/10/06 | Munir Ahmad - ap
Posted on 03/10/2006 10:44:51 PM PST by NormsRevenge
ISLAMABAD, Pakistan - Pakistani soldiers backed by helicopter gunships targeted a suspected militant hideout near the Afghan border, killing about 30 militants in a volatile tribal region that has seen repeated clashes in the past week, a military spokesman said Saturday.
The spokesman, Gen. Shaulat Sultan, said the attack was launched late Friday near Miran Shah, the main town in North Waziristan. Sultan would not reveal the identity or nationality of the slain men, but told The Associated Press the attack was launched using "authentic intelligence, and according to our information about 30 miscreants, who included foreigners, were killed."
An intelligence official in the region said the targeted compound belonged to a pro-Taliban cleric, Maulvi Sadiq Noor, although it was not clear whether he was there at the time. The official spoke on the condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak to the media.
Noor and other pro-Taliban tribesmen have been targeted since earlier this week when their armed men captured government buildings following a military attack on an al-Qaida hideout near Miran Shah. Over 100 suspects and eight soldiers were killed in the fighting.
Days later, authorities imposed a curfew in Miran Shah after regaining control of government buildings from militants, who are believed to have retreated to nearby mountains.
Sultan said the raid late Friday blew up a cache of weapons.
Pakistan is a key ally of the United States and has asked tribal elders to evict foreign militants and their supporters from their areas or prepare for military action.
The recent clashes in North Waziristan were the worst in Pakistan's tribal regions since 2004 when scores of al-Qaida militants, troops and local fighters died during fighting in the neighboring region of South Waziristan.
Officials say members of Afghanistan's toppled Taliban regime and al-Qaida militants continue to hide in Pakistan's lawless tribal regions near the Afghan border.
The recent unrest has compelled thousands of residents to flee to safer areas, but on Friday, some shops reopened and several families began returning home.
Farid Ullah, 34, who had fled to the nearby town of Mir Ali with his wife and five children, told The Associated Press that he had returned to Miran Shah after hearing that fighting had ended.
"We pray for peace, and we ask the government to avoid the use of force and to try to resolve all issues through peaceful means," he said as his family walked to the town.
Sher Nawaz, 38, a tribesman, said he had also returned after living with his relatives in a nearby village for three days.
Pakistan has deployed 80,000 troops and mounted a series of military operations in tribal regions to flush out militants. Pro-Taliban tribesmen insist that most of the people killed in the army raids were innocent civilians, a charge the military denies.

For anyone who doesn't dip into the tripe over at GLP, the latest anonymous threat is from someone claiming to be a high class hooker. She says California is going to be nuked on March 11th by an "Iranian" submarine. She claims John Hannah told her this. Just FYI...
