WEB SITES LINK CATHOLIC COLLEGES TO PLANNED PARENTHOOD, ABORTION-RIGHTS GROUPS

MANASSAS, VA (March 16, 2006) - Despite the Catholic Church's clear opposition to abortion, contraception and premarital sexual activity, a Cardinal Newman Society (CNS) review of Catholic college and university Web sites has revealed links and referrals to abortion clinics including Planned Parenthood-the largest abortion provider in the United States-and abortion-rights and pro-contraception groups.

CNS is a national organization to renew and strengthen the Catholic identity of Catholic colleges and universities in the U.S. Founded in 1993, CNS has more than 18,000 members.

Whether it's internship and job placements with abortion-rights groups, or health center referrals to Planned Parenthood, or general "resource" links, the Web sites of Boston College, DePaul University, Dominican University of California, Georgetown University, Loyola University of Chicago, Loyola University of New Orleans, Our Lady of the Lake University, Santa Clara University, Seton Hall University and the University of Detroit Mercy are under criticism by CNS.

Another Catholic college-the College of St. Catherine in St. Paul, Minnesota-posts online information encouraging students to use contraceptives and abortifacient devices.

In a letter faxed today to the presidents of these 11 institutions, CNS urged them to remove the Web links, referrals and information immediately.

"Leading young adults to abortion clinics and pro-abortion advocacy groups is like feeding them to the lions," wrote CNS President Patrick J. Reilly to the college and university presidents. "The incidence of abortion is already very high among college-age women. Faithful Catholics expect Catholic colleges and universities to embrace a 'culture of life' and avoid scandal."

This is not the first time that CNS has raised concerns about Catholic college and university Web sites. In December 2002, CNS reported that 12 Catholic colleges and universities were providing links and referrals to Planned Parenthood and other pro-abortion and pro-contraception services and groups. All of the schools removed the links and referrals except Loyola University of Chicago. In the 2004 report "The Culture of Death on Catholic Campuses," CNS again identified concerns with Catholic college and university Web sites, but several of those concerns have not been resolved.

In the U.S. bishops' 1999 guidelines for Catholic colleges and universities, they insisted that Catholic institutions display their "commitment to provide personal services (health care, counseling and guidance) to students, as well as administration and faculty, in conformity with the Church's ethical and religious teaching and directives." The U.S. bishops' "Ethical and Religious Directives for Catholic Health Care Services" warn against "the danger of scandal in any association with abortion providers" and instruct that cooperation with other groups or services "may need to be refused because of the scandal that might be caused."

Concerns identified by CNS include:

The Web page for the American Studies Program at Boston College (Chestnut Hill, MA) offers "Useful Web Links," including links to "The Abortion Rights Activist Home Page" (appears to be defunct), the "New York Clinic Defense Task Force," the pro-abortion Feminist Majority Foundation, and the pro-abortion National Organization for Women. These links were reported in the CNS report "The Culture of Death on Catholic Campuses" in 2004. http://www.bc.edu/schools/cas/amstudies/resources/links/gender/ http://www.bc.edu/bc_org/avp/cas/amerstudies/gender.html

The Web site of the College of St. Catherine (St. Paul, MN) provides a "Sexual Health" page for students that promotes "safer sex," including contraceptives and masturbation (both opposed by Catholic teaching). The site also provides a long list of "birth control options," including sterilization, the abortifacient IUD and emergency contraception. This problem was reported in the CNS report "The Culture of Death on Catholic Campuses" in 2004. http://www.stkate.edu/selfcare/sex.htm

The Web page of the Women's and Gender Studies Program at DePaul University (Chicago) offers students links for "Jobs, Internships, Volunteer Opportunities," including a link to the pro-abortion Feminist Majority Foundation's "career center." The "center" lists jobs and internships at abortion-rights groups including NARAL Pro-Choice America, Catholics for a Free Choice, the National Abortion Federation, the Planned Parenthood Federation of America, and the American Civil Liberties Union. http://condor.depaul.edu/~wms/program/students.html http://condor.depaul.edu/~wms/program/wmsJobOpportunities.doc

The Web page for the International Human Rights Law Institute at DePaul University College of Law (Chicago) links to Planned Parenthood Global Partners, which strives to build a "global movement" for abortion rights, as a resource on "Women." http://law.depaul.edu/institutes_centers/ihrli/links/women.asp

On the Web site of Dominican University of California (San Rafael, CA), Professor of Psychology Gail Matthews has posted a list of "Field Placement Sites" for student internships, including Planned Parenthood of Marin County. http://www.dominican.edu/academics/facultypages/matthews/fp-business-list-1.doc

The Web page of the Women's Center at Georgetown University (Washington, D.C.) offers students a "Women's Health Resource List" which refers students to local centers that perform abortions, including the Capitol Women's Clinic in Washington, D.C.; the Commonwealth Women's Clinic in Falls Church, Virginia (recently closed); the Greater Washington Health Center in Washington, D.C.; the Northern Virginia Women's Healthcare Center in Fairfax, Virginia; and the Women's Health Care Center in Washington, D.C. These referrals were reported in the CNS report "The Culture of Death on Catholic Campuses" in 2004. http://www.georgetown.edu/student-affairs/womens/DCwomenshealthresources.html

The Web page for the Women's Studies Program at Loyola University of Chicago refers students to the Planned Parenthood Federation of America. The Program's "Organizations" links include the pro-abortion Feminist Majority Foundation and the pro-abortion National Organization for Women. Following complaints from CNS about the Web site links in 2002, the university refused to remove them. Loyola provost Peter Facione told the Philadelphia Inquirer (May 6, 2003): "We're committed to being a university where students and scholars are invited to pursue wisdom and truth, and we feel that, just as we wouldn't exclude books from the library that counter Church teaching, or readings from course syllabi, we don't exclude links to a website." http://www.luc.edu/womenstudies/services_resources.shtml

The Web page of the Women's Resource Center at Loyola University of New Orleans links to pro-abortion "resources" including the Feminist Majority Foundation, the National Organization for Women and the National Women's Law Center. http://www.loyno.edu/womens.center/wmstlinks.html

The Web site of Health Services at Our Lady of the Lake University (San Antonio, TX) refers students to "Area Clinics and Urgent Care Centers" including a local Planned Parenthood clinic and other clinics offering "family planning" services. http://www.ollusa.edu/studentlife/healthservices/Download%20File/SA%20Clinics%202003.xls

The Web page for the Anthropology Department at Santa Clara University (Santa Clara, CA) lists examples of recent internship placements including Planned Parenthood. http://www.scu.edu/cas/anthrosoc/anthro/careersandinterns/internships.cfm

The Web site for the Elizabeth Ann Seton Center for Women's Studies at Seton Hall University (South Orange, NJ) provides "links worth taking", beginning with a link to the pro-abortion National Organization for Women. This problem was reported in the CNS report "The Culture of Death on Catholic Campuses" in 2004. http://artsci.shu.edu/cws/links.htm

The Web page of the Women's Studies Program at the University of Detroit Mercy (Detroit) offers links to the pro-abortion Feminist Majority Foundation, the pro-abortion National Organization for Women and the Planned Parenthood Federation of America. http://www.udmercy.edu/womensstudies/links.php

Why did they leave out John Carroll!!! Sloppy, sloppy, sloppy.

They reported this last year after I sent them all the info:

[Catholic Campus News]
JOHN CARROLL REFERS STUDENTS TO PRO-ABORTION CENTER

In its newly revised "Community Standards Manual," John Carroll University
refers students to a publicly pro-abortion counseling service. The manual
recommends either the University Counseling Center or the Cleveland Rape
Crisis Center to students who may have suffered a sexual offense. But
last year Cardinal Newman Society disclosed the latter Center's membership
in the Freedom of Choice Cleveland Coalition, which advocates abortion
rights. The Cleveland Rape Crisis Center was the originally designated
recipient of funds raised from last year's performance of The Vagina
Monologues, but protests convinced university officials to redirect the
funds to another charity. Apparently the Center was not worthy of
funding, but it is entrusted with counseling John Carroll's students who
may be pregnant as a result of rape or incest.
