Stroger poll watcher accused of illegally coaching voters
Chicago Sun-Times ^ | March 18, 2006 | STEVE PATTERSON AND DAVE NEWBART

A top aide to Cook County Board President John Stroger faces questioning about why she was inside a suburban polling place Friday, allegedly guiding elderly voters through their ballots and posing as an election official.

Betty Hancock Perry explained she was "trying to help voters" at the Lydia Healthcare Center in Robbins, election officials said.

But those who observed her say she was helping them cast votes for her boss and discouraging votes for challenger Forrest Claypool.

She gained access, they say, by assuring them she was an election judge hired by Cook County.

As officials with the county clerk and state's attorney arrived to investigate, they say Hancock Perry left for lunch and never came back.

Hancock Perry, who lives near Stroger's 8th Ward and is the county's director of contract compliance, was licensed to be a poll watcher for the Stroger campaign.

But those credentials specifically state it is illegal for poll-watchers to touch election materials, including ballots, or to "interfere in any way with the election process or polling place operations."

After questions from the Chicago Sun-Times about her actions, a Stroger spokesman said she had just quit the campaign.

......Hancock Perry has worked for Cook County since 1990 and, making more than $103,000, is responsible for overseeing minority contracting on county projects.

The Demo-rats lying, cheating?

Gee, I just can't believe it. They'd never stoop to anything like that would they? Would they?

The Dims don't know anything about voting fraud. Well, aside from having invented it of course.

I can tell you for a fact that stuff does not go on where I vote..I voted in the primaries and ask a worker if they could help me with voting since I had never used the machine before just the paper ballet..She handed me a piece of paper that they had sitting on a desk in plain view and shows you step by step how to use the machine. ..I do however resent the fact it was in English and Mexican..If they can't read English why in the heck are the allows to vote in my country..

"The Demo-rats lying, cheating?"

And just how is it exactly that you it's the Dems? mmmmmm?

It's not because, true to the MSM template that, when a rat is involved, the big "(D)" is nowhere to be found anywhere in the piece. How predictable.

And just how is it exactly that you KNOW it's the Dems?

Sorry. I missed a word 'cause my wife kissed me good morning.

Oh, it's the Dems all right. This is typical urban politics. It goes on all the time. I'm looking forward to Sixty Minutes' investigation. NOT.

Reminds me of how many of the hanging chads in Florida(2000) were for the democrat candidate (and many were on ballots that were double punched -- that is, votes for two candidates)

The most likely explanation offered was that someone had stacked many handfuls of ballots and then taken a long wire and punched the "vote" for Algore. The result was hanging chads towards the bottom of the stack and "dimpled chads" at the very bottom where th wire had not quite penetrated.

Crooked County has lost more population in the 5 years than any other in America. Wonder why? Stroger has become a cartoon character and is very corrupt. Let the DEM's eat their own.

THAT'S what should have been investigated. And it wouldn't have taken much to get to the truth. Had anyone wanted to. These are the things that p*ss me off the most, obvious corruption, obvious proof, just waiting, waiting, for someone to investigate. Just dam*.

All polling places should have video surveillance, just like banks.

I agree. They also should have facial recognition software to determine if the voter is a actually alive or dead.

Or maybe let Jack Bauer and CTU from "24" take control of voter fraud in the Urban cesspools we call cities.

This brings up an interesting point, whether each ballot should have an identifying code to a registered voter that could be verified. Of course this would give the "liberals" heart failure and cries of big brother, etc.

One person, one ballot, one vote. This too would violate Dims policy of one "Democrat", two or three votes.

And,...........If Jimi HAD picked up an accordian,....we might all be listening to "Purple Polka" instead.
