Republican gubernatorial candidate Dick DeVos already has spent more than $1 million on a statewide TV ad blitz and plans to continue running ads for at least another week, a campaign spokesman said Thursday.
Democratic Gov. Jennifer Granholm has responded by having her campaign manager send out a request for donations to buy television ads of her own.
"Never before has a Michigan politician started campaigning so early on television," Howard Edelson wrote to Granholm supporters. "Make the largest contribution you can today so that we can spread the truth immediately."
DeVos began running a 60-second ad a month ago promoting himself as a job-maker and businessman who would turn things around in Lansing. He added a 30-second ad a week later. Both ads are being rotated on affiliates of CBS, NBC, ABC and Fox statewide.
DeVos campaign spokesman John Truscott said Thursday that the ads will continue running through at least next week, then there might be a break. The campaign has a different ad that could start running anytime.
"We kind of evaluate week by week where we're at," Truscott said. "There will be times that we're on and times that we're off."
The ads have helped DeVos narrow the gap in his race against Granholm to 10 points, said Ed Sarpolus of Lansing polling firm EPIC-MRA.
"The ads have helped create some name recognition" for DeVos, Sarpolus said. "Since they see the Democrats have little or no money to counter these ads, it's safe to do."
Granholm spokesman Chris De Witt would not say when the Granholm campaign would begin running ads. But he acknowledged the DeVos ad blitz is getting Democrats' attention.
"Sure, we're concerned about it," De Witt said.
If only the RNC could get it together...
Impossible!
Look at the candidate they are solidly behind in Rhode Island. Look who they didn't back against Arlen MacSpecter.
When a real conservative threatens Chafee they put RNC money on the RINO.
For the Michigan contest they'll center on a proven establishment RepublicRAT.
I saw an ad for DeVos for the first time last night...guess I don't watch TV much. I was surprised to see a campaign ad so early.
Jenny Grandstand is completely bereft of ideas. Her opponent ran a few ads, so all she can do is ask for money to run her own. It'll be time to watch every show with remote in hand so I don't have to see or hear the breathless one.
The DeVos ads during the NCAA basketball game was really a high quality ad. If that is Devos's first volley, Granholm is toast.

And I should have then tossed out my homemade Internet bumper sticker:
DeVos....as in Amway's DeVos?
Yes.
