CA: More Than 500,000 Rally in L.A. for Immigrants' Rights
Los Angeles Times ^ | March 25, 2006 | Teresa Watanabe and Anna Gorman

Posted on 03/25/2006 4:34:12 PM PST by calcowgirl

Joining what some are calling the nation's largest mobilization of immigrants ever, hundreds of thousands of people boisterously marched in downtown Los Angeles Saturday to protest federal legislation that would crack down on undocumented immigrants, penalize those who help them and build a security wall on the U.S. southern border. Spirited crowds representing labor, religious groups, civil-rights advocates and ordinary immigrants stretched over 26 blocks of downtown Los Angeles from Adams Blvd. along Spring Street and Broadway to City Hall, tooting kazoos, waving American flags and chanting "Si se puede!" (Yes we can!). The crowd, estimated by police at more than 500.000, represented one of the largest protest marches in Los Angeles history, surpassing Vietnam War demonstrations and the 70,000 who rallied downtown against Proposition 187, a 1994 state initiative that denied public benefits to undocumented migrants.

Many of the marchers were immigrants themselves — both legal and illegal -- from Mexico and Central America. Some had just crossed the border, while others had been here for decades. There were construction workers and business owners; families with young children and people in wheelchairs. Throughout the afternoon, protesters heard speakers demand a path toward legalization and denounce HR 4437, which would tighten border enforcement and crack down on employers who hire undocumented workers.

The rally was organized by numerous unions, religious organizations and immigrant rights groups and publicized through Spanish-language media, which encouraged participants to wear white to symbolize peace and bring American flags. The mostly peaceful march stretched over 26 blocks, shutting down streets and tying up traffic around downtown for hours. Police estimated the crowd at 500,000... Participants said the massive mobilization shows that immigrants' voices must be heard and that they are contributing to the country's economy.

You completely miss the point. The vast majority of California kids are pap...worthless. They know not the fruit of toil, nor the reward of responsible focus and persaverance.

By and large they are worthless. They want society to serve them...provide to them.

My son is active duty army [Rangers]. He in this state is an exception.

The majority of the kids in coastal California are dope smoking liberal arts wannabees. They are nothing a nation can depend on.

Don't even for minute impune my support for the youth that make up our armed services...don't even think of going there with me...I am parent of a soldier in harms way...

How dare you...

Is this being reported in LA? Are these photos being widely shown today or is there the usual coverage of some car chase on the freeway? I still can't believe it this is happening in our country. Well, not "our" country. Guess I'll go pack now.

The last sign says, "we are thousands of voices screaming without stopping we are not criminals we only want to work." Looks like that 50% that can't write in English can't write very well in Spanish, either.

And, doesn't understand that committing a crime by crossing the border illegally DOES make someone a criminal.

I think the failure to act in the face of a demonstration of strength of a known-to-be-illegal population on United States soil constitutes a gross violation of Article 4, Section 4 of the Constitution of the United States of America. If this is not a "high crime" it is certainly a "high misdemeanor". Why is there not one member of Congress who will confront this de facto Presidential power to negate lawfully enacted legislation?

You condemn and generalize about an entire generation of kids that I happen to think the majority of which are pretty good citizens.
I guess you only view you and your own as worth something. You don't even begin to realise the sacrifice being made by many here in this state on behalf of their country. I do and I value their service.
How dare you.

OK, GWB. These people are firing a warning shot across your bow. Are you going to defend this country or not?

Trust me folks. The libs keep trying to make Iraq the albatross around W's neck. Blinded by their hate for Bush. Illegal aliens will be the deal breaking issue, and they could ride it back to majority party status if they weren't wacko about Bush.

This is just plain depressing. These SOBs (congress) are selling us out, and our country out from underneath us.

The pictures on the local news are heavy on the little American flags the organizers passed out.

You are a bitter bitter soul.
I'm sorry that someone or something has shaped your view of this generation in such a negative way.
As you get older and these "worthless soft handed tripe" support your butt with their SS taxes and defend it's right to be free... perhaps then you might give them your praise and thanks???
Then again they probably will still not be good enough for you.

(sacrifice)

That's a big nail hit squarely on the head.

Take a good hard look at the groups surrounding all this and ask yourself which party is closest to your preferences.

The Democrats are so far out in left field they have climbed into the bleachers.

Get used to it. That's the way it is. The GOP is the rightward most viable party. Period and fullstop. If you'd like to influence its positions, do it from the inside. And btw, that only works if they stay in power so make damn sure you help out the GOP candidates in vulnerable districts.

Yes, they are ILLEGAL. There should be NO rights. Send them home and everyone who protests with them. I am in Southern California and legal residents are becoming the minority. We are being invaded. It's insane.

One thing about being packed in like that in a crowd, ya never know what kind of communicable diseases you are exposing yourself too.

I was thinking '24' should be for real - - and maybe Jack Bauer doen't quite stop the bad guys in time.
