ABC Misleads Viewers with "Pulitzer-Prize Winner"

“Starting off a week’s worth of “in-depth” reporting on global warming, “World News Tonight” falsely presented a liberal journalist and author as a Pulitzer Prize winner.

“Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Ross Gelbspan blames a 15-year misinformation campaign by the oil and coal industry” for the public’s lack of alarm over climate change, ABC’s Geoff Morrell told viewers of his network’s March 26 evening newscast.

“The point of this campaign was not necessarily to persuade the public that global warming wasn't happening. It was to persuade the public that there is this state of confusion,” Gelbspan told ABC News.

But it was ABC News confusing its viewers over Gelbspan’s credentials as well the scientific debate over climate change. While Gelbspan’s publisher and the group he founded, Climate Crisis Coalition, claim the journalist won a Pulitzer Prize, a search for Gelbspan on the Pulitzer Prize’s official Web site yields no results for the former Boston Globe editor.

No, no, no.

What they meant was that Gelbspan won the "Pullet Surprise" at Kentucky Fried Chicken.

I used to think that too and then I visited their site.

Some of the writings (over the years) seemed top-notch to me.

There is no man made global warming...maybe global warming with human help...but it's all cyclical.

In other news...the world ends at 10 o'clock tonight, update at 11.

The guy still claims he won it. Here is his rationale from a Mother JOnes interview:

MJ.com: What kind of response has your reporting received from the deniers?

RG: The first response that I had was a web-based campaign to impugn my professional integrity. They basically came out and said that I was a résumé fraud. I had said that I was a co-recipient of a Pulitzer prize and they said, “No, Gelbspan never had a role in a Pulitzer prize.” That was pretty hurtful; I was proud of that prize. I was an editor at the Boston Globe and we did a big series looking at racial discrimination in greater Boston. When the Globe won the Pulitzer for this project, the publisher said to me, “This is your series. You conceived it, you directed it; so we are designating you as recipient on behalf of the Boston Globe.” I didn’t feel like I was distorting it by saying I was a co-recipient. When I stepped back and reflected on it, I felt pretty good about it because I realized there was nothing wrong about the book that they could critique, so as a result they resorted to character assassination instead.

"Hot and Bothered", Mother Jones, 4-18-05.

More from the Dan Rather School of Broadcast Journalism...He didn't actually win the Pulitzer Prize, but he should have. The honor was fake, but accurate.

Gelbspan is an old line hard lefty. ABC must be desperate if they quoted him.

The Giant Boob award.

Or was it the "Chicken Little" Award?

Of course the globe is warming. It is a NATURAL cycle of this planet in the solar system. Humans have nothing to do with the Orbit of this planet, though some seem to think they do.

I was proud of that prize. I was an editor at the Boston Globe and we did a big series looking at racial discrimination in greater Boston.

Well, that explains everything. Racial discrimination and global warming are inseparable issues.
