Family Watchdog (Locate Sex Offenders in Your Area, Protect Your kids)

[Recovering_Democrats' note: A family member notified me about this site recently, and I feel obliged to share it with all FREEPers. You can enter your address and see where registered sexual offenders live and work in your area. With all the abductions and murders of innocent children the past year or two, I would feel guilty not passing along this information. Please use it to keep your children protected.]

90% of all sexual assaults against children are committed by someone whom the victim knew. * The typical sexual predator will assault 30 - 60 times before being caught. ** The re-arrest rate for convicted child molesters is 52%. ***

We aim to reduce these percentages by ensuring that all sexual predators are known.

This service exists for one reason, and one reason only. The founders are tired of reading stories about missing 9 and 10 year old children killed by registered sex offenders, and decided to do something about it.

We invite you to use our free service to locate registered sex offenders in your area. You just enter an address, and we'll show a map. You can click on the squares that appear, and see photos (where available), addresses, and convictions.

Our notification service is very simple. You specify up to three addresses (not zip codes) that you want to watch and the distance around those addresses. We do the rest. We update our data daily from multiple public data sources. As soon as a convicted sex offender registers an address in your area, we will alert you. It's that easy.

We pray for the day that our service is no longer necessary, and look forward to shutting it down. Until then, let Family Watchdog be your family's best friend.

We found a sexual offender lived on the next street, less than 2 blocks away. Be careful, and God bless.

It's not a bad idea to do a search. I did one on my hometown and found a HS classmate was on the registry. It shows you even small towns are not safe and when it comes to people....you just never know.

We live in a small town, very small, although landmass is not small at all. Still, there are 7 in our town, 3 within a few blocks.

Here is a problem that not many people have realized yet.

Here in North Carolina, this program was started ten years ago.

And now the first people that were registered are COMING OFF the list, so they'll be free to roam the country at will -- WITHOUT registering.

RALEIGH, N.C. -- A state House of Representatives committee is looking to extend the time period in which a person convicted of a sex crime would be listed on the state's sex offender registry.

Current state law requires that convicted sex offenders appear on the list for 10 years. The committee is looking to extend that period and to ask people on the list for a filing fee to offset the cost of the program.

and see where registered sexual offenders live and work

A couple notes of caution:

1) This only shows those who are registered. Some locales with restrictions on where they can live are seeing a registration (compliancy) rate of 50%, down from 80 - 90%.

2) A while back (no reference, sorry) I saw a study that said at least half of sex-offender convictions are first-time convinctions -- in other words, they'd not be on any registry. (Interested, if anyone has more info on this.)

In other words, never assume you're safe just because there are no known and registered sex offenders living in your neighborhood. Chances are better than even that the sex offender living nearby is either unknown (undetected and as yet unapprehended) or unregistered.

Don't take the risk. Educate --and watch-- your children.

Excellent advice.

I was given this link sometime back and checked it out, after already having checked with the website information provided by the Commonwealth of Virginia.

According to the map provided by this website there are no registered sex offenders within a few square miles of my address.........that is entirely different than the information provided from Virginia.

I applaud these people for the service they are providing, but I would advise folks to also check the websites provided by their own states.
