"... miss Collins has ever been."

Wrong name. That's what happens when you get overheated on two different threads at the same time.

It probably doesn't matter.

Good morning.

Excuse me if I take anything attributed to her with a grain of salt until I hear her say it.

Watching her body language when she says it would be good, too.

What about the dead driver/translator?

Where does he stack up in Jill's world view?

I think it is important to withhold judgement until she is free of her captors.

Good afternoon.
"I think it is important to withhold judgment until she is free of her captors."

You are absolutely correct, of course.

As someone who knows Jill Carroll, let's give the attacks a rest. I met Jill last summer in Cairo where I was studying Arabic as part of my M.A. in Middle Eastern Studies in anticipation of a U.S. gov. job. Jill is what the Christian Science Monitor, her friends and colleagues say she is--an intelligent, caring, decent person appreciated and loved by those who know her. So, casting asperions about her is way off the mark. She's not a sympathizer, she's not a traitor, she's none of those things. She's a human being and American lucky to be alive through our prayers. As a good journalist, she researches and writes about all sides, sharing views maybe some of us don't like and don't want to hear, but, hey, that's part of her job and at least she has the guts to do it, risking her life in the process. As far as accusations about her being 'brainwashed'...perhaps those making the accusations know better than I would.
All I know is that when I hung out with Jill (not wearing a hijab then, b/c in Cairo as a woman you don't have to, but it helps in Iraq) and I knocked back plenty of beers, shared some great laughs and had great times. She's down-to-earth woman who has a great spirit. Anybody says anything to the contrary doesn't know her.
Thanks, and in the words of Forrest Gump, that's all I have to say about that.

OK, I will withhold judgement for now. Since you know her, I am curious, who paid for the trip to Iraq? She wasn't officially working for anyone when she went there. She was there a long time. Just wondering.

Oh come on. Do you not think that, after three months in captivity, you would not possibly have said the same thing to secure your freedom.

Are you sure from the bottom of your heart? Are you really imagining what she's gone through?

And you're not a 28-year-old girl are you?

I think any of us would say anything to get out of that situation.

Reports today (Sunday) seem to indicate you are right; she was not speaking freely before, and has now denounced her captors as the criminals they are.

Maybe something does smell:

Subject: Jill Carroll's "release in Iraq" and how the libs will use it to dupe America

I just heard from a good friend of mine who attended the University of Massachusetts when Jill Carroll was a journalism student there and a reporter on the school newspaper. Since UMASS is not Ohio State, he not only personally knew her there, but read her articles, and
what he has to say is incredibly unsettling if you have seen her on TV the past few days since her release. To suggest she is about to be used by all of liberalism and the leftist media to hurt the USA and portray further abandonment of our troops "to the troops" is suggested in his note to me, which I have paraphrased to keep his
identity confidential. I know this guy well and he is a super straight shooter, and his knowledge is firsthand. Read on:

"I have some inside information that I ask you circulate so that everyone is not blindsided by what seems likely to happen once the leftists begin to use the Jill Carroll release by the terrorists in Iraq. I was amused to see America's media this morning debating whether Jill Carroll is suffering from the "Stockholm Syndrome" as a result of her captivity in Iraq. In case you and your colleagues
find yourselves somehow being drawn into this debate, which I expect will only grow in the next couple of days once she starts giving major media interviews, I wanted to give you a bit of background on Jill. I actually know Jill quite well from UMass, where she was a reporter for the school newspaper. When Jill makes comments about how her suffering was nothing compared to the Iraqi people and that she is rooting for the insurgents, Jill is NOT suffering from Stockholm Syndrome. She is an extreme liberal [probably more communist/socialist]; she has never been a fan of America [which she used to spell Amerikkka in her articles], she hates the military, and she despises "republikkkans" as she likes to write. I have no doubt that she went to Iraq with a political agenda and wouldn't be surprised to hear some outrageous things come out of her mouth in the upcoming days. She is an activist way beyond Cindy Sheehan------ so watch out. We are in for a whole string of anti-us and anti-military comments. Mark my words, you are going to see her on Larry King talking about how the military is abusing the Iraqi people and how bad the war is, and about how righteous her captors are."

So----- to be forewarned is to be forearmed. Please make sure we get this into the hands of as many folks on the side of the USA and the troops as possible, as she is surely going to be used by the media to try to undermine all that is going on in Iraq.

Put a gun to your head and you will say all kinds of crazy things.

Anyone here who has been to any kind of survival training might have a slight inkling as to what she went through.

She has been quiet for now many days now? This goes with her family and friends also. Why?

First, she said the worst thing she could ever have said upon release (true or not), she was then advised to correct her prior statement, and how she have been told to shut the hell up, probably accompanied with a death threat. All these is not new and have been done before by government and gangster (legal / illegal) all over the world, with that saying of "hoping that nothing bad might happen to your family". I can't wait until CIA knock on her door and pay everyone there multiple visits. I can tell you that her phone is definitely tapped at the moment.

Jill Carroll is the kind of reporter who follows her beliefs and passion hence naive and bias, not necessary dead on with the truth. She is the kind who tells you what she wants you to hear, and most certainly she does not have the entire big picture in her head. When she was first released, she said what was on her naive mind, then she realised that she was endangering everyone close to her at home, hence the very quite her at the moment, and I certainly do not believe she could snap out of her brain washed mind in a day if that was the case, simply because that was not the case, and she does not need this huge long rest before speak to the public again as she certainly does not have any mental difficulty to do so. I am not certain whether this was all a hoax, but I am certain that it is in some way some kind of a hoax to some extend.

"She has been quiet for now many days now? This goes with her family and friends also. Why?"

Probably because she needs some down time. If *you* had been held hostage for 80 days, *you'd* probably take some time off, too.

And welcome to Free Republic.
