Bush steps up effort to bolster low ratings

CRAWFORD, Texas - President Bush is taking time to explain himself, open up to the public in new ways and court Congress as he tries to breathe life into a presidency beset by sagging ratings and influence.

With a job approval rating under 40 percent, Bush, who went to his Crawford ranch for a quiet weekend, has a long way to go. Aides acknowledge it will take a while to rebuild his image, and much will depend on the outcome of the Iraq war.

White House staffers, who have long limited the president’s appearances to speeches and photo opportunities with little contact with regular people, are now inclined to let Bush be Bush.

He is talking at length. His March 21 news conference lasted nearly an hour. A Freedom House speech with questions from the audience in Washington Wednesday went on for an hour and a half.

Bush even took questions from gray-haired retirees at a senior citizens’ home recently and they asked some tough ones. More such sessions are planned.

Bush has found himself in dookie up to his eyeballs because he thought the liberal media would like him more if he picked a fight with his own voters. Bush tried to sneak a radical feminist, Harriet Myers, onto the Supreme Court, showing that he doesn't want to win the culture wars. Now, he's trying to create 11 million new voters for John Kerry's next campaign.

He could try making government smaller and less intrusive. And veto some stuff.

It's ok that you are dead wrong once again AD.

You may take solace that you aren't the only observer from outside the US who suffers from the delusion that presidencies "hang by a thread" if the almighty Approval Rating dips below the magic threshold of 40%.

This is a popular "no-thinkum" gauge dreamed up by mouth breathers with IQ's in the two-digits who can't think their way out of wet paper bags.

The Presidency of the Greatest Nation on Earth is not run on the silly notion of popularity in the polls. Not all positions and circumstances are going to please every person in the country...life just does'nt work that way. This will be hard to believe, but sometimes a President must forge ahead and live with decisions that piss everyone off...that's his job. Lots of responsible adults understand that and learn to live with it.

He needs to hammer, hammer, and hammer some more, on the Dems. Put them on their heels. Make them play defense until November. Then, when the election is over and we don't lose are arss, he can do it some more still.

I have some tips for the rubber stamper in chief.

Not proposing more socialist wealth redistribution programs

Shrink government - instead of grow it

Find his veto pen

Stop sending his Sec of State out to say dumb things like "We think there is a lot of room left for diplomacy with Iran." I'll give him the benefit of the doubt on this one, I think she's dumb enough to say that crap on her own

Read my tagline!

Unfortunately when the POTUS screws the pooch... we all have to live with it.

Well said.

It's the perception of the "pooch being screwed" that is likely to be out of kilter by the mis-informed.

It naturally leads to a chorus of wounded cries of "Foul!" from the court of the dusty footed.
