"Users still claim "long lasting improvements in self-awareness, self-esteem, openness and insight into personal problems"

Which is of course, total bogosity. Same snake oil sold for LSD, mushrooms, peyote etc... ad nauseum. Nothing new under the sun.

I don't think it's a good idea to generalize from one drug to the next, or from one person to the next. Some drugs in some people have effects which are terrifying and permanent, while other drug in other people can wear off with time.

"He also suffers from painful muscle rigidity around his neck and jaw which often prevents him from opening his mouth."

I have heard this reported as a transient symptom, while under the influence of MDMA or shortly thereafter, in subjects who have used it recreationally. I have heard it said that MDMA is sometiems cut with strychnine (just why I would wonder) or somehow deteriorates into strychnine. Perhaps MDMA itself causes neck and jaw muscle rigidity.

Anyone who takes a drug prepared or sold illegally is very foolish. It could be anything, and the people who prepare it are not accountable and are probably irresponsible.

The doctors at St George's Medical School may think Mr. A took MDMA, but the truth is they don't know what he took. Neither does he. It could have been anything.

Actually, your comment makes a good point. I agree with you -- people often DO build up a tolerance to whatever they're taking.

I'm so shocked and so worried about the effects this guy is going through -- hallucinations and paranoia and other effest that may be permanent -- that at first I didn't correctly catch the point you were making.

Not complete bogosity.  For decades, MDMA was used as an aid in marriage counseling. Under controlled conditions, I can see how it would be extremely useful.

The guy in the article was obviously self-destructive in any case. If he'd taken the same amount of Tylenol as it is claimed he did MDMA, he'd be in similarly bad shape, likely dead due to kidney failure.

Uh, yes.

If the active alcoholic continues down a road that this guy did, the results are the same.
Take a trip through a state mental hospital or on skid row.

However, not all alcoholics who continue to drink will end up like this, just as not all who use ecstasy end up like this.

Not these particular symptoms. But alcohol is the second leading cause of preventable death in the U.S. with about 100,000 deaths a year.

Though the man, who is now 37, stopped taking the drug seven years ago, he still suffers from severe physical and mental health side-effects, including extreme memory problems, paranoia, hallucinations and depression.

Nope, legalizing drugs means there are restrictions on purchasing, limiting availability to minors, and heavy taxation.

those that want the drugs will get them one way or another.
Reduce crime and create millions of tax dollars to finally
offer real research into addictions and treatment methods and offer rehab to those who want it.

Jaw clenching and grinding teeth were the reason behind so many "club kids" sporting pacifiers at rave parties, or at least it was back in the day when I was going to such places. I'd think nine years straight of this would very likely lead to painful rigidity around the neck and jaw.
