Let's not delude ourselves. DeLay did not step down for the good of the party, rather because he knew his indictment was imminent.

Hello, he was already indicted a long time ago.

You dead wrong. Delay was a powerfully effective force.

I truly believe elective office is behind him.

But what would he (and the rabid leftists) do if he won as a write-in candidate? Let the fur fly!

we complain when they fight too hard.

We complain when they make enlarging the majority a goal at the expense of actually doing what they were elected to do.

Delay quit because:

1. The aide turned witness has something to incriminate him.

or

2. The aide turned witness will result in such bad-sounding PR that it cannot be overcome before the election.

Delay was a powerfully effective force.

Yes, he was very powerful and very effective...the problem is that in the majority he used that power to create a GOP patronage machine at the expense of principal... if not, if he was so powerful, why are spending earmarkts out of control?

You've spent too much time listening to hare-brained gossip at the MSM water cooler.

Democrats in Congress are ecstatic to see Delay gone. And it isn't because he was perceived as weak and counterproductive to the Republican cause.

Yes, they are happy to see him, gone, because he was building a GOP patronage machine and beating them in elections.

But, that was done at the expense of accelerating pork to record levels. I noticed you didn't address that. If he was so powerful and effective, and also a good conservative, why were things like the transportation bill so out of control with pork?

To bad we can't bet on outcomes on FR. You would lose.

The Dems focused their guns on Newt Gingrich and drove him from elected office because he sunk their gravy train.

Is he any less effective now?

Delay will be cleared and the Democrats and media will be left looking stupid. Again.

The Time Mag article quoted him as saying he would take up VA residency to run for election there.

Ditto, I think sitting congress critters cannot speak personal garbage about other sitting critters. Once out, he knows where tons of dirt is on the others and can speak freely.

A little known factoid, in that redistricting, his own was, and he lost a lot of conservatives and made himself more vulnerable.

Whether Delay is guilty or not, the Democrats profited by attacking. They will attack someone else now.

"He drew the full force of the liberal attack because because he was so dangerously effective."

The Democrats and their pet dog the MSM have targeted and will continue to target any conservative who is effective. I have always thought that Nixon would never have been persecuted for 20 years by the media if he had ignored the Alger Hiss evidence instead of giving Whittaker Chambers the opportunity to speak out. Not that Nixon was a complete conservative, but he was a strong anti-Communist.

And yes, we do need to pick politicians that will do just the right thing. Better than getting scalded.

Pefection rarely exists in real life and even less in politics.
