Group burns Mexican flag in front of consulate (Tucson AZ)

Dozens of protestors and counter protestors showed up in front of Tucson’s Mexican Consulate as a Mexican flag was burned in a heated debate that saw tempers flare.

Border Guardians, a group formed along the Arizona border to speak out against the estimated thousands of illegal immigrants that enter the U.S. every day through the Tucson sector, led the protest.

“Flags are symbols of government, not of people," shouted Roy Warden, as a member of his group, Border Guardians, set foot to the Mexican Flag.

One woman speaking out against the Border Guardians yelled, “This is not a gesture of humanity, this is a gesture that provokes.”

As a handful of journalists, and people from both sides of the debate huddled around, members of Border Guardians set fire to Mexico’s flag.

“We have declared this our day, and our moment of expression," said Warden.

The demonstration began before the flag burning as protestors verbally sparred with ACLU members showed up to observe the event.

One man stomped, and danced on the Mexican flag. He also taunted the empty, Mexican Consulate to express the group's view:

"(This protest) is against the Mexican government and the Mexicans that are illegally present in the United States right now," says Laine Lawless, Director of Border Guardians, “I want the American people to know that we're going to stand up for them."

Roy Warden added, “You may not enter our country without our permission.”

Juan Manuel Calderon Jaimez, the highest ranking official at the Mexican Consulate here in Tucson, was unable to comment on the groups flag-burning.

However, we did talk to some Mexican nationals here in the U.S. who witnessed the event, and their opinions varied.

“I think it's dangerous,” says Liz Moreno, a naturalized U.S. citizen originally from Mexico , “and I don't think it's right, burning the flag."

Another woman present, identifying herself as a legal immigrant from Mexico, said, “It’s their right to do it, although (I don’t) support their actions.”

A half-dozen observers from the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) also showed up. Caroly Trowbidge, an ACLU spokesperson, said, “We are here to make sure that everybody's first amendment rights are respected."

In an effort to mock the popular chant “Si se puede”, or “Yes You Can”, used by the millions of marchers who’ve protested in support of illegal immigrants, the Border Guardians also began shouting “NO SE PUEDE, NO SE PUEDEO.”

Moreno added, “It made me angry, and it hurt me."

In response to some people calling his group racist, Warden said, “Our movement is of all colors of skin. It has nothing to do with racism."

Warden says the group's action's were not specifically targeting the people of Mexico.

“We stand for the Mexican people,” says Warden.

“I’m picking more on their government than anything else, because their government promotes their illegal status here," said Lawless.

Members of the Border Guardians tell News 4, they also plan on burning more Mexican flags at some of the mass marches planned throughout the week.

Get ready for trouble this week. This was brought on by lack of a forum for U.S. Citizens. Some folks won't stand idly by. Be prepared for trouble in Tucson and Phoenix.

I'm sure the Treason Times and Washington Post will give it front page coverage claiming it was the actions of drunken pro-military racist conservative christian republicans.

This illegal immigration problem has been going on for decades. Why has it suddenly become the cause du jour? I don't get it. I've been railing against this for years, and now suddenly it is something everybody is talking about - after all the damage has been done. What gives? All this concern should have arisen around 1975, or 1985, or 1995, or....

We are witnessing the birth of the latest and hottest new fad. "The blazing Mexican flag dance."

I don't know. Maybe all that disgust and controlled anger against a do nothing inept government is finally going to boil over. It may have just been waiting for the spark to set it off and the illegal immigrants struck the match.

Heh. What you said.

The irony, of course, is that they'd all move north if Texas actually re-joined Mexico.

Could be because there are 30-40 million illegals in the CONUS.

Could be because 19 of the 9/11 hijackers were illegals.

Could be because the emergency rooms are closing down because the illegals come to border towns for medical services.

Could be because the illegal aliens have caused more death and destruction than 9/11 on a slower timeframe.

Could be because we have US troops in the AOR losing their lives defending borders, and in Kosovo, and in Korea and Egypt defending borders, when they will not defend the farmers and ranchers who live on our border from the illegal alien smugglers the hordes of illgals, the drug smugglers and Mexican army.

Could be because folks dont believe what the MSM, the senate and the president are telling us, and want action not talk.

Believe me, it can get alot worse.

Picture a billion illegal aliens crossing our borders.

There's nothing right now to stop it.

It all came to a head, so to speak, with 911 and reports that terrorists were crossing the border from MX. But I agree with you. The problem should have been attacked and the borders closed years ago.

You of course are correct - something that should NOT have been done was to grant amnesty in 1986 when we passed the Simpson-Mazzoli immigration reform. Now it is probably too late because not a single pol (other than Tancredo) has the stomach to stand up to these illegals - all 20+ million of them.

I've been wondering a bit myself.

I guess it's the way both the Republican and Democrat fat-cats tried to sneak the amnesty thing through the senate despite the revulsion against it expressed by most Americans of either party.

Of course the pro-criminal immigrant demonstrators also pissed a lot of people off by shoving the Mexican flag in everyone's faces and talking about their mythical "Atzlan".

This flag burning is a direct response to that, in my view. Not sure it was a good idea though. Demonstrate against the illegals? Sure. Chant anti-immigration slogans? Go right ahead.

But flag-burning should be reserved for the most contemptible and despicable of enemy nations. And as mad as I get at Mexico sometimes, I don't think they qualify.

A combination of two things.

9-11 and a Government that refuses to acknowledge securement of the borders is just as vital as fighting the enemy at the source.

An people in D.C. had better wake up soon.

I am not advocating violence by ANY MEANS here, but when they ignore the wishes of the People...and people blatantly wave another country's flag in our face while demanding special rights and taunt asking what are we going to do about it?

It's on the head of the politicians in Washington what comes of that. They are setting a stage for violence to occur by allowing what is illegal to take place. If people fear they have nowhere else to turn, some people are going to take it into their own hands. And they won't all be responsible like the Minutemen. Their cowardice is making things far worse than they need to be.

You are not getting the gist of what's happening here.

1. The schools are using school busses to transport the protestors from the high schoolers that are skipping school

2. TUSD Teachers are participating.

3. The MSM is being very supportive of the marches.

4. The Arizona Legislature, along with Butch Reno are cowering with fear from the illegals in Phoenix and are expecting 55k from Tucson

5. The local media is parroting loony leftist organizations talking points and egging folks on. Parroting ACLU, and AZTLAN groups propaganda.

Example.

Officials: Radio host's call to kill border crossers dangerous (KFYI Phoenix radio show from evening of 8 March!)

http://www.kvoa.com/Global/story.asp?S=4744652&nav=HMO6

6. The weather is heating up, was 88 today, expecting same tomorrow.

7. AIMS testing starts tomorrow; these are the no child left behind mandatory tests. If the students dont take them this week, they dont pass to the next grade. Last week there were tens of thousands of skippers/truants.
