The U.S. and Mexican flags are going back up at the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum. The 15 board members present at Thursday evening's special meeting voted unanimously to once again fly the flags, reversing a previous decision to take both down following escalating complaints about the Mexican flag from visitors and threats to the museum's animals. "Our work is not about border issues, it's not about immigration issues," said Robert Edison, executive administrative director of the museum. "It's about helping people understand that the Sonoran Desert exists in two countries." But the museum is increasing its spending on security, and will...

Student tears Mexican flag; suspect remains at large 9/19/07 by Jeremy Hunt Daily Lobo A student took down a Mexican flag from a flagpole outside Scholes Hall Monday, tore it and took it to the Air Force ROTC office, police said. A summons was issued for Peter Lynch, 30, by the Bernalillo County Metropolitan Court for criminal damage to property, said Lt. Pat Davis, spokesman for UNM Police. Davis said Lynch is not a member of ROTC, and it is unclear why he took the flag to that office. Lynch has not been charged because UNMPD cannot find him, Davis...

I went into a Wal-Mart in Texas to buy a 3X5 Texas Flag and a 3X5 American Flag. I have bought both at this Wal-Mart several times. This time no Texas Flag and only 1 American Flag were available but 12 3X5 Mexican Flags were available. The store is not located in a predominantly Mexican American area. I drove around to several Wal-Mart stores today and found many Mexican Flags and American Flags and even a few Texas Flags.

CASTRO VALLEY - Students waving American flags amidst racial tension between Latino and white students were back at Castro Valley High early this morning, with those on both sides expecting the situation to escalate. At 7 a.m. several pickup trucks and other vehicles with American flags began arriving in one of the parking lots. The students then walked around the lot in a small, quiet demonstration. Ashley Morrison, a junior, is upset some view these flag-wielders as "racist white kids." She said it is about supporting the country, and believes there's a double standard for students who bring flags representing...

11 News has learned the principal at Reagan High School has resigned. Two weeks ago the principal was accused of emailing an offensive picture to a teacher. HISD said investigators confirmed that sexual harassment complaint. In March this same principal was disciplined by HISD for flying the Mexican flag on the campus flag pole. We're told the flag incident was part of a compromise to keep students from walking out during an immigration protest.

Eyewitness News has learned the same HISD principal who decided to fly the Mexican flag next to the American flag on school grounds has resigned. Robert Pambello told HISD on April 22 he is resigning for personal reasons. In late March, Pambello put up a Mexican flag outside the school to fly alongside the US flag. That incident happened while many immigration protests were taking place both in Houston and around the country.

Mexican Standoff I dont know how everybody else feels about it, but to me I think Hispanic people in this country, legally or illegally, made a huge public relations mistake with their recent demonstrations. I dont blame anybody in the world for wanting to come to the United States of America, as it is a truly wonderful place. But when the first thing you do when you set foot on American soil is illegal it is flat out wrong and I dont care how many lala land left heads come out of the woodwork and start trying to give me...

MILTON-FREEWATER — A candidate for the City Council has a court date this week on charges resulting from a tug of war over the Mexican flag. Police said Greg Sterling confronted students in front of the city hall during a demonstration April 6, and officers had to pull him away from the students and flag to arrest him. Sterling, 50, said the demonstrators provoked him and called the assault charge "made up." "I didn't think I was doing anything illegal," he said. "I'm a proud American and I wasn't out to hurt anybody and I think I was taunted." He's...

Some citizens have become alarmed at seeing foreign flags being waved during demonstrations. Prior to the vigil Cardinal Mahony asked...

A Tucson man was arrested Tuesday for his role in the burning of a Mexican flag as part of a counterprotest at a pro-immigration rally. At about 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, Tucson police cited Roy Warden, 58, on suspicion of assault, criminal damage and reckless burning, and then released him, according to Sgt. Decio Hopffer. Video footage shot Monday by police and the media showed Warden assaulting a TV cameraman and a photographer, Hopffer said. Because only one of the men pressed charges, there is only one assault charge. Warden faces the criminal-damage charge for harm done to the concrete shuffleboard court where Warden's group was burning the Mexican flag, Hopffer said. Warden and his group, Border Guardians, arrived at Armory Park just after noon Monday to stage a counterprotest to the 15,000 marchers who were protesting what they see as unfair immigration laws. At about 2:15 p.m, they burned Mexican flags and tempers flared. Police arrested two girls for throwing water at Warden and his group, and a scuffle broke out as police escorted them away. On Monday, Tucson police arrested six people on charges of aggravated assault on a peace officer, interfering with governmental operation, hindering prosecution and disturbing the peace. Hopffer said police are still reviewing tape of the scuffle. Warden said the charges are a direct result of political pressure from the Mexican Consulate. "If they saw something unlawful, why didn't they commit an arrest then?" Warden said. He said he plans to represent himself at his court hearing on April 24 and said he's confident he will clear himself of charges. In addition, he said he plans to sue the cameraman for defamation of character and denying his right to free speech. Another member of Border Guardians, Laine Lawless, called the arrest a petty way to punish the group for its dissenting voice. March organizers also questioned why it took police so long to make the arrest. They have a requested a meeting with city officials for Thursday to discuss the issue, said Zoe Hammer, spokeswoman for Border Action Network, one of the local human-rights groups that organized the march.

MEXICO CITY -- A Mexican official on Monday struck out at a U.S. anti-illegal-immigrant group for burning the Mexican flag outside a consulate in Tucson. "We consider any provocation or vandalism of national symbols to be unacceptable," Foreign Relations Undersecretary Lourdes Aranda said in a news conference. About 12 people from the Tucson-based Border Guardians burned the flag Sunday on the sidewalk in front of the Mexican Consulate. They carried a sign that read, "Defending American Sovereignty." Group members spoke out against proposed immigration laws and blamed the Mexican government for the number of illegal migrants who enter the United...

Had to work late so I'm now stuck here. Watching the protest from the 25th floor of my office tower. Its gathering right down in front of the street I'm on. Traffic is blocked from all directions heading into downtown. I estimate about 10000 to 15000. Overall majority are holding up mexican flags, not american flags.

Dozens of protestors and counter protestors showed up in front of Tucson’s Mexican Consulate as a Mexican flag was burned in a heated debate that saw tempers flare. Border Guardians, a group formed along the Arizona border to speak out against the estimated thousands of illegal immigrants that enter the U.S. every day through the Tucson sector, led the protest. “Flags are symbols of government, not of people," shouted Roy Warden, as a member of his group, Border Guardians, set foot to the Mexican Flag. One woman speaking out against the Border Guardians yelled, “This is not a gesture of...

As marches and rallies to demand changes to U.S. immigration laws start today across the country, members of a local group that burned a Mexican flag at Tucson's Mexican Consulate Sunday vowed to continue burning flags. On Sunday, about 12 people from the Border Guardians, a Tucson anti-illegal-entrant group, burned a Mexican flag on the sidewalk in front of the consulate, 553 S. Stone Ave. Drawing more onlookers and media staffers than supporters, the group read several statements opposing immigration-law proposals, blaming the Mexican government for the number of illegal immigrants entering through Arizona's border. The group said Sunday's flag...

What's the deal with Mexican Americans and Illegal aliens carrying the US flag today? There's a poll about this exact subject. Q: Protestors marching in support of illegal immigration are carrying American flags instead of Mexican flags because… phxnews.com What, did their spin-doctors already show them how they were losing this issue? The first protests by illegal aliens and their supporters were met with quite a bit of anger from the American voter. Besides the obvious reasons of border security and law breakers demanding amnesty, the vast majority of the marchers carried Mexican flags. Few carried American flags and many that did turned the American flag upside down. That did not play well, so organizers will try a new gimmick for Monday's march.

HERE WE GO AGAIN By Michelle Malkin · April 09, 2006 10:47 PM ***scroll for updates*** They're baaack. Illegal alien public relations experts are advising their followers to put aside the Mexican flags and tone down their radicalism, but many reconquistadors and their friends can't help themselves. Hat tip to John A. for the protest photos today from Dallas: Black Panthers came out to show solidarity with the open borders lobby... And the Che cultists were out in full force again, too... There's no photo, but the Dallas Morning News described this: Although the stars and stripes predominated, some people...

'Furl that flag,' for 'tis leery By Wesley Pruden THE WASHINGTON TIMES Published April 7, 2006 The ancient Chinese sage who advised generals yearning to enhance their splendor to "put out more flags" ought to be recognized as the patron saint of every rebel with a cause. Sometimes the rest of us can't hear the music for the sound of marching feet, but we can see the flags. The backlash against Mexican flags in the street theater about illegal immigration has set off a run on the Stars and Stripes. Every demonstrator needs one, whether he really wants it or...

WASHINGTON - Florida's Sen. Mel Martinez, who was a key negotiator in crafting a Senate compromise on immigration, had a word of advice Friday for immigrant groups protesting a House proposal to make felons out of illegal immigrants: Keep the Mexican flags at home. ''I think it's terrible,'' the Republican senator said of the Mexican flags that have drawn criticism as protesters wield them at immigration rallies nationwide. ``I think it's a very mixed message.'' ''It's fine for people to express themselves,'' the Cuban-born Martinez said. ``But if what this is about is the opportunity to be an American, to...

Hundreds of protesters gripped Mexican flags as they marched for immigration reform in the past few weeks, but they say a display of cultural unity is being mistaken as a lack of loyalty to the United States. The displays turned off many Americans. Conservative talk show hosts admonished the protesters, while everyday people wrote angry letters to the editors of their local newspapers. Some called for those carrying the Mexican flag to return to Mexico. Others questioned why immigrants demanding rights in the United States would wave symbols of Mexico. But those who carried them, and scholars of the immigrant...

Tensions over immigration reform heightened in the Phoenix area's East Valley Thursday when students raised a Mexican flag over Apache Junction High School — and then other students yanked it down and burned it. "I know (they) shouldn't have burned the Mexican flag," said Jacob Stewart, a 16-year-old sophomore. "I heard it was raised above the American flag and that just irked me." He said the turbulence was tied to debates going on in the state Legislature and Congress, where ideas ranging from offering illegal immigrants a chance at citizenship to making them felons are being floated. Freshman Chelsea Garcia,...

Our view: Reacting to student protests, community is more sensitive about foreign symbols, in part because of 9/11 attacks Tucson, Arizona | Published: 04.03.2006 When you want to relay an important message, clarity is vital. You don't want to send mixed signals or express your views in a way that can be misinterpreted or, even worse, seen as a threat. We bring this up because protesters who have rallied against possible immigration reforms in the Legislature and Congress are apparently confusing a lot of people in our community. In demonstrations and school walkouts in Tucson and other cities, the participants...

WASHINGTON, April 1 (UPI) -- Waving the Mexican flag at pro-immigration demonstrations in the United States has riled conservative commentators and lawmakers, a report said. U.S. Rep. Tom Tancredo, R-Colo., said he has appeared on a dozen radio shows in the past week to talk about the "huge and growing problem" of illegal U.S. immigrants, The Washington Times reported. U.S. Rep. Virgil Goode Jr., R-Va., also was outraged. "I say if you are here illegally and are displaying and waving the Mexican flag, you should go back to Mexico and fly that flag there," Goode said.
