Yep - I was debating between XM and Sirus, and the signing of Stern turned me off. Of course, I think it's Sirus that broadcasts all the NFL games, so RATS there, but I still have DirecTTV Sunday Ticket.
Brazen...Yes. Intelligent...hardly.
His election night coverage was an embarassment. He crowned Kerry the winner at 5:00PM and then proceeded to "I told you so" the audience until it became obvious he was clearly wrong.
The next day he acted as if he didn't make an ass of himself.
I worked in radio for a few years. Here is my two cents, 1) Stern at his peak had about 12 million in his audience.
A far cry from where he is now.
2) The difference between Stern radio stations and Rush's radio stations is that you have to pay Stern (CBS) to put him on your station. Rush is free to have, you don't have to pay him to have him on your station.
3) Morning radio is the most competive when it comes to ratings as opposed to afternoon and drive time in the evening.
4) Stern wasn't on that many radio stations across the country as opposed to Rush who is in all 50 states.
Don't forgot XM has Opie and Anthony, these "shock jocks" were fired because they had a couple broadcast from St. Patrick's Catherdal in NYC while having sex.
And Sirius will have Nascar in 2007 too.
In an interesting but meaningless coincidence, Stern and Limbaugh share the same birthday.

Yea, the NFL on Sirrus sure is tempting. I wish they would offer the NFL package on Time Warner Cable, but I don't think they do. Bummer! And, although the NFL added a 3rd Thanksgiving Day game, those of us without the NFL network won't see it. Bigger bummer!!!
Rove believed the same. Even viewed an unforgivable mistake (and why would it be so?), this example does not illustrate any broader worth or wickedness about the show.
Are there other indictments worth mentioning? Things that would warrant never listening?
a couple of observations.....
- Liberal talk stations keep crashing-and-burning in the ratings when compared to stations with conservative or mostly conservative lineups. (if there is concern about a lack of balance, you certainily could never determine that from the workings of the marketplace)
- Local hosts appear to be a vanishing breed, so it does not appear that there is a sudden outcry for those either.
(usually you hear that when the station goes all syndicated/automated, or files with the FCC to move to another city, suddenly making local service an issue)
- They appear to be defining "conservative" as right-leaning political talk shows like Rush, Hannity, etc. Would not seem to take into account Christian programming, and talk shows about non-political subjects (car talk, hunting shows, etc.) that tend to attract a conservative audience.
All in all I'd say that conservatives are dominating talk radio on all fronts, save for NPR.
I wish there were more West Coast Conservatives! I like listening to Michael Medved's program, but usually have to turn it off due to the wretched west-coast Socialist rabble that keeps calling in!
It certainly does illustrate a broader criticism of the show seeing that Jay regularly references his background in "political polling" and consistently touts his "campaign insider" credentials to substantiate his views.
In addition, he consistently refers to Iraq as
"Iraq-nam". Its intolerable.
