PHOTO THREAD: Immigration demonstrations coast to coast (stark visuals show scope of the problem)
Yahoo News Photos ^ | 4/11/06

Ladies and gentlemen, the scope of the out-of-countrol illegal immigration problem is more massive than even those who've been warning about it for years may have realized. The photos on this thread are only a sampling of the hundreds available from yesterday's coast-to-coast demonstrations. They are intended to show -- in stark visual terms -- the scope of what we are up against. I think they also show that, in some respects, we have already lost the arguments so many have been making. We lost with immigration "reform" in the 1960's.

More significantly, we lost in 1986 when President Ronald Reagan signed the first amnesty for illegal aliens in U.S. history.

Link to the full text of The Immigration Reform and Control Act (Simpson-Mazzoli Act, IRCA, Pub. L. 99-603, Nov. 6, 1986, 100 Stat. 3359)

Summary of the IRCA of 1986:

a. Authorized legalization – amnesty -- for aliens who had resided in the United States in an unlawful status since January 1, 1982. Covered aliens entering illegally or as temporary visitors with authorized stay expiring before that date, or with the Government’s knowledge of their unlawful status before that date, and not excludable.

b. Created sanctions prohibiting employers from knowingly hiring, recruiting, or referring for a fee aliens not authorized to work in the United States. (This provision has not been enforced.)

c. Increased enforcement at U.S. borders.

d. Created a new classification of seasonal agricultural worker and provisions for the legalization of certain such workers.

e. Extended the registry date -- the date from which an alien had resided illegally and continuously in the United States and thus qualified for adjustment to permanent resident status -- from June 30, 1948 to January 1, 1972.

f. Authorized adjustment to permanent resident status for Cubans and Haitians who entered the United States without inspection and had continuously resided in country since January 1, 1982.

g. Increased the numerical limitation for immigrants admitted under the preference system for dependent areas from 600 to 5,000 beginning in fiscal year 1988.

h. Created a new special immigrant category for certain retired employees of international organizations and their families, and a new non-immigrant status for parents and children of such immigrants.

i. Created a non-immigrant Visa Waiver Pilot program allowing certain aliens to visit the United States without applying for a non-immigrant visa.

j. Allocated 5,000 non-preference visas in each of fiscal years 1987 and 1988 for aliens born in countries from which immigration was adversely affected by the immigration reform 1965 act.

Thank you for posting the photos. I am simply overwhelmed and don't know what the answer is. I am concerned that their threatening numbers are going to cause our lawmakers to cower into granting them amnesty, otherwise, can you imagine the harm organized groups like that can do? We'd have NO way to control it! I've said before, they could cause a 'civil' war of sorts yet they aren't just located at the border, they are in great numbers everywhere!

Or, we can invade Mexico and make it part of the US. We'll have mucho oil and natural resources.

Now THAT is a plan!

Time to clean house.

Really?! How, exactly? It would be far, far more effective for tens of millions of American citizens to demonstrate in the streets across the country. Only scenes like that would have the power of a true counterweight to what we saw yesterday.

Whatever you think about this issue, the Statue of Liberty outfit (Boston) is great.

"Immigration demonstrations" corrected to: "Illegal aliens and their accessories-after-the-fact demonstrations"

Only `free global market' libertarians define immigration as lacking basic controls, that is, our immigration laws.
It bears repeating (and as often as necessary) that foreign nationals entering the USA without permission, i.e. Mexicans `sneaking' across our border, is in violation of our laws.
Then demanding the rights of our citizens is sheer effrontery.
Either change the laws or enforce them.

And if all these people (who are not U.S. citizens) were protesting in Mexico and putting their efforts into changing their own government, maybe they wouldn't need to come to the U.S.

Let me know when you are going to organize something!

I don't have the power or resources necessary to organize something nationwide. The demonstrations yesterday were organized by Spanish-language radio stations, activist groups, Leftist organizations, etc. Unless comparable groups are willing to use their power and resources to help organize massive counter-demonstrations, they won't happen.

If you look at what I said in Post #1, I said it wouldn't happen. As least, by doing this photo thread, I'm doing what is within my personal abilities to do.

I keep hearing about how expensive it would be to find all of the illegals and deport them. They are making it very easy for us with these rallies. The fact that no one is even suggesting roundups shows just how far gone our country is.

Yep! Good article and the truth will (NOT) set you free by sitting.

Unless sufficient numbers of American citizens act, and act soon, that is precisely what will happen.

...bring in our military, surround them at these outings and you will catch over a million of them at one time. Boot them out. Drop them into Mexico and put guns on our border.

Bump for your post #38.

I would be there holding my American flag high and burning the Mexican flag. This issue is getting me to the point of constant anxiety and anger.

My Italian grandparents migrated here from Sicily in the early part of the 20th century and took the legal route to becoming American citizens. These ingrates from south of the border want us to just pretend like they came here and waited in line by proposing amnesty. That would be the greatest failure of this century (amnesty), and it would be a decision that would turn the tide of politics in this country in a direction more than likely seen as unfavorable by a majority of the people on FR.

There was a rally here in Tampa outside the NY Yankees spring training stadium. To say I'm racist would be a gross misstatement, but not being able to order food at a restaurant because the waiter doesn't understand me or having to choose what language I want to use at an ATM is tantamount to usurpation of my and my country's sovereignty and right to say our official language is English. Get the fsck out of my country if you don't want to speak the language!

Speaking of the Statue of Liberty--maybe it is time for a tea party on Ellis Island. If amnesty is given to the illegals what does the Statue of Liberty stand for?

that basically sums it up: Change the laws or enforce them.

I can't see how rational debate on this issue can start at any other point than exactly what you said. I have a personal opinion about which one I would like to see, and other intelligent people whom I respect have the opposite opinion, but as voters in a democracy we need to be presented with a choice A. Change the laws, or B. Enforce them.

Tax Day is coming. How many would be willing to go to jail to make a point? It is all I can figure for people who don't want to get in the streets. Afterall, our Congress is in the Amnesty mood!
