His online slogan: Killem All Let Allah Sort Em Out

Signature phrase of Marshfield candidate upsets Imam Talal Eid

MARSHFIELD - The slogan appears right below Steve Barber’s name every time he posts a message on the popular Marshfield Forum online discussion board:

‘‘Killem All Let Allah Sort Em Out.’’

Where other forum users punctuate their messages with quotations or song lyrics, Barber uses a contemporary riff on ‘‘Kill ’Em All, Let God Sort ’Em Out,’’ a war cry coined by U.S. special operations forces during the Vietnam War.

‘‘I figure we’re fighting Muslims. ‘Allah’ works,’’ Barber said.

Barber, 49, is a retired Army staff sergeant who, for the third time, is running for election to the board of trustees of the town’s veterans memorial park in the town election on April 29.

Barber said only one forum user has complained about his use of the modified ‘‘Kill ’Em All’’ phrase, which, like its predecessor, is used in some military circles and on T-shirts sold on the Internet.

To create a catch phrase that advocates violence toward Muslims ‘‘is just ignorant,’’ said Imam Talal Eid, former spiritual leader of the Islamic Center of New England in Quincy.

‘‘We are familiar with these things,’’ he said. ‘‘Everybody wants to kill the Muslims. We express dismay at such a slogan.’’

Barber said he never worried about offending when he made the phrase part of his signature. Below it, he identifies himself as a ‘‘proud American veteran’’ and former commander of Marshfield’s American Legion post.

‘‘I spent 20 years in the military,’’ he said. ‘‘You see shirts (with the slogan) all the time. It never offended anybody when they said, ‘Kill ’Em All, Let God Sort ’Em Out.’’’

Not a good slogan. It may be popular and humorous but that is not what the United States Armed Forces are about.

Perhaps not, but it may be useful in a "good cop, bad cop" strategy. As in "You learn to be nice with me. You do NOT want Bad Cop to be sent in. Really. You do not."

While I agree that is true today, there is the heritage of Curtis LeMay, and others, to consider.

When we occupied Germany and Japan, the populace *knew* they'd been beaten, and needed to straighten up and listen to what the occupying power had to say.

Doesnt the Koran say to kill all infidels.

I guess the problem here for the Imam is who is doing the kiling.

And I do speak from experience being a Vietnam veteran and currently serving with the Special Forces in Afghanistan.

Thank you for your (past and current) service to our country!

their religion actually resembled a more dualistic Manichaean sort of religion with a little Donatism thrown in).

Donatism... is that the one where they keep saying "donate money"?

;^)

"France's last truly successful general was probably Charles Martel."

Or Charlemange who had many more victories but none as memorable as Martel's at the battle of Tour's.
