Boy attacked by mountain lion

A 7-year-old boy hiking with his family was attacked Saturday by a mountain lion...

The boy, whose name was not released, was apparently in a group taking a short hike at a scenic area of Flagstaff Mountain, Division of Wildlife spokesman Tyler Baskfield said.

"The father turned and saw the cat had a hold of the young boy," ...

The group began screaming at the cat and throwing rocks and was able to free the boy...

the mountain is prime habitat for the cats, and there had been several recent sightings of mountain lions in west Boulder.

Someone should have gotten a picture. How cool would it be to have a t-shirt with a picture of yourself and a cat in a death struggle that says "Someone went to Flagstaff Mountain and all I got was this stupid t-shirt".

These attacks often happen to family groups when the younger kids race ahead of the group.

The explosion of lion, wolf, coyote, and bear populations nationwide will make this problem even worse in the years to come.

Plus the reductions and restrictions on predator hunting dilutes the opportunity for the younger predators have have a learning experience.

Many predators use to fear humans, not they they think of us as a source of food.

Wow. Flagstaff Mountain is not exactly a remote area, either. It's citified, as far as mountains go. I've always wanted to see a mountain lion in the wild.

Jeez. We're going to Fort Collins this summer and plan on hking in rough wilderness with my children. Best that I take precautions. Any suggestions? Keep them close, behind and carry? Should we bring them at all to the mountains?

Friggin' environmental nuts. We should feed them all to the cats. Who in their right mind fights to introduce a man-eater to areas frequented by families?!?

I haven't seen any video on the subject, but there was an article with a picture of a mule swinging a mountain cat just the other day here on FR.

"Any suggestions? Keep them close, behind and carry?"

Some here may disagree with me but I was raised rurally and I will not go into the woods without a gun. Wilderness IS beautiful but it also can be very dangerous.

DOW officials found the mountain lion just past midnight about a half mile from where the attack happened on a popular hiking trail near Flagstaff Road just west of Boulder.

The female mountain lion weighed 80 pounds and was one or two years old.
