No Hint Seen in Memo that Plame's Role Was Secret (Valerie Wilson, a CIA WMD managerial type)
The New York Sun ^ | April 17, 2006 | JOSH GERSTEIN

Contrary to published reports, a State Department memorandum at the center of the investigation into the leak of the name of a CIA operative, Valerie Plame, appears to offer no particular indication that Ms. Plame's role at the agency was classified or covert.

The memo, drafted by the then head of the State Department's Bureau of Intelligence and Research and addressed to the then secretary of state, Colin Powell, was carried aboard Air Force One as President Bush departed for Africa in July 2003. A declassified version of the document was obtained by The New York Sun on Saturday.

One attachment to the memo consists of typewritten notes a State Department representative took at a February 19, 2002, meeting where sending Mr. Wilson to Niger was discussed. "Meeting apparently convened by Valerie Wilson, a CIA WMD managerial type and the wife of Amb. Joe Wilson, with the idea that the agency and the larger USG could dispatch Joe to Niger to use his contacts there to sort out the Niger/Iraq uranium sale question," an American diplomat serving as the west and southern Africa division chief in the State Department's intelligence and research bureau, Douglas Rohn, wrote.

Read the whole article at NY Sun and don't miss the last part:

A cable attached to the key memoranda indicates that on September 10, 2001, one day before the terrorist attacks on America, Prime Minister Amadou of Niger told embassy officials "that there were buyers like Iraq who would pay more for Niger's uranium than France." The cable also said American officials received "frequent leadpipe guarantees by the French ambassador here that no uranium diversion to rogue states is possible." A Senate report discussed the alleged comment from Mr. Amadou, but did not give the exact date.

No wonder Fitzgerald never put joe under oath....he knew Joe was lying. To put him under oath would blow his case and claim to fame.

Joe would have us think the State Department he worked for is lying. EVERYONE is lying but poor joe.

Compared to the thread just preceding this, yes.

Blood thirsty Calvinists on the rampage again, one assumes.

So Valerie was not covert. And Valerie was in on the planning of her husbands trip to Niger. And we damn well know these rabid Bush-haters intent was to try to undermine US foreign policy, not to find out the truth. Mr. and Mrs. Wilson should be the ones on trial in a sane world.

You can't be "covert" if you drive yourself in your own car through the front gate of CIA headquarters everyday to go to work.

This has been a farce since day one.

"Do we even know yet who sent Screamin' Mad Joe to Niger?"

I'd sure like to know who gave the final approval for his trip.

Joe says that his wife didn't arrange the meeting and had the misfortune of escorting him into the building. If I'm not mistaken, the 9/11 Commission or Senate Intelligence Committee found that Valerie had escorted her husband to the meeting itself and introduced her hubby to everyone in the room. Not sure if she stayed or not, but she was probably hovering outside the door while it was going on. The Wilsons are the liars in this whole ordeal and I wish Fitzie would put them on the stand, but then that would ruin his perjury case again Libbey.

Agree....but even given the total bias of the MSM, why hasn't the Administration been able to quench this story from day two at least?

"Do we even know yet who sent Screamin' Mad Joe to Niger?"

We know now, as we have known from the start: his wife. This document says it wasn't the State Dept, it wasn't the Administration, it was his wife, trying to find him a job. This has been admitted by most participants.

Yes, but you can be "classified" like every other Tom, Dick, and Valerie of an analyst, janitor, cook, librarian, or IT staffer who drives through that gate every weekday morning, simply because you have some kind of official clearance (you don't get on to Langley property without a clearance).

And thus we have the heinous liar Joe Wilson exploiting the monumental stupidity of the lazy MSM press by conflating the meanings of "covert" with "classified", and (hilariously) asserting that "national security was violated" because someone merely said that his "classified" wife worked at CIA.

He's very careful not to say "covert" these days, and also very careful to avoid saying that any law was ever violated. The "outing" is now - according to Joe - "an administrative violation". That's his new weasel-worded speil.

Notice how quiet the MSM has been with regard to Joe Wilson.

Certain 'reporters' are going to be called to testify in Libby's trial.

Lots of DEPENDS on order in the Russert and andrea Mitchell house these days.

Ping for interest. Also, recall that those subpoened by TeamLibby have to resond to the court, tomorrow I think. So there should be some interesting reading upcoming. When will this case be thrown out and the conspiracy between old media, Kerry Kampaign, Joe WIlson and CIA be exposed? Lets hope soon. The Rocky memo started it all, and hopefully he gets caught up in it as well.

Yes but now that there is to be a trial, you'd better believe that Mr. Libby's lawyers do not intend to leave alone.

Upon putting his hand on the Bible and swearing to tell "the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth" to the world, Mr. Wilson can choose to continue to spew his lies and be subject to a charge of perjury or finally tell the truth.

Sounds as if Libby is going after Wilson and Niger (and Fitz is fighting it)
Interesting reading

Bush has shown great weakness both terms trying to play nice and get along like an amateur, letting the dems define every issue, and define them with lies no less. This Wilson issue could have been dealt with in 2 sentences. Iraq has bought thousands of tons of cake from Africa, and they are still pursuing it. His wife isn't a covert agent. End of story.

His Iraq defense is limp wristed as well. The Iraq war started in 1991, it was started by Saddam. It has restarted because he Saddam VIOLATED A PEACE TREATY, AND 17 RESOLUTIONS...the Dems screamed WMD and Bush played right into their hands. He's wasted half his presidency defended his owned failed explanations.

Wilson was proven a liar already by claiming his wife didn't recommend him for the job and now he's claiming it was meaningless that she accompanied to the CIA meeting. What's even funnier is Wilson saying his trip to Niger wasn't even discussed until half-way through the meeting. LOL! If he wasn't there to discuss going to Niger, why was he even at a CIA meeting?

Equally telling, in the same statement, Wilson claims his wife only escorted him into the CIA building, then he's so stupid, he says she left the room before the meeting began. Wilson just can't keep his stories straight!
