Why don't they give it as a present to our friends in Taiwan? Better to have it watching the Commies than sitting in mothballs.

The reactor cores on subs are not refuel-able as I understand it or likely not cost effective to refuel. 20-25 years service and the fuel is spent. That's why they off load the spent fuel and case up the core for a nuclear waste site.

To get the reactor out it destroys the ship as it is one of the first things installed during construction. I may be wrong and some Bubble Heads will correct me but that's what I've been told is the reason. Nuclear powered carriers can be refueled once though. IIRC.

Think it's old but you'll have to ask the Pig-Boat Freepers.

Got that steamin part down pat. Those were the days. Tough ships, good crews, ready to rumble at a moments notice. In my day and yours I'm sure we would have put the Russian Navy on the bottom in about two weeks. The silly vilians have no idea what our military is capable of. Still.

Thanks to traitors like Aimes the Russians had broken our codes and knew exactly where every sub was for many years. We didn't know that they knew, for a long time. Given that, I wouldn't make any assumptions about a conflict then would have turned out.
