Pakistan needs to do more to crack down on terrorism along the Pakistani-Afghan border, a spokesman for Afghan President Hamid Karzai said Tuesday.

Rahim Karimi said in the news conference that Afghanistan need greater "cooperation" from both its eastern neighbor and the international community in its battle against Islamic militants.

Coalition and Afghan forces have in recent days been fighting fierce battles against Taliban fighters near the Afghan-Pakistan border.

Thanks TheLion.

I looked around and all I could find was rocks and bottles thrown at officers.

"Arab-Americans take part in state Capitol immigration rally"

SACRAMENTO (AP) -

ARTICLE SNIPPET: "The group waved a Palestininan flag, and one of its organizers stood at a microphone criticizing the war in Iraq, denouncing the U-S Patriot Act and railing against Israel's policies in the Middle East.

The program director for the National Council of Arab Americans shouted from a stage at a Sacramento park. As Lara Kiswani put it, "No to the U-S occupation of Iraq. No to the Israeli occupation of Palestine.""

"Ordinary heroes"
May 2, 2006
Review by Megan Basham

COLUMN SNIPPET: "No one could claim that the experience of watching United 93 is completely pleasurable, but there is a payoff to stress, tension, and sorrow of reliving that day beyond simply learning more about the activities of the military and FAA. We also learn something about ourselves, and it is this: For every one talking head on television that preaches concession, there are a thousand that refuse to go quietly into the night."

Four dead as Egypt police hunt resort bombers
CAIRO (AFP) - An Egyptian police officer and three suspects were killed in clashes in the north of the Sinai peninsula amid a manhunt for the perpetrators of last month's deadly resort bombings, security sources said.

Two police were also wounded in the exchanges which came after another deadly firefight Sunday in which three suspects were killed.

According to Attorney General Maher Abdel Wahed, the final toll for the bombings in Dahab last month -- which struck at a peak holiday season -- stands at 18 killed and 90 wounded.

Twelve Egyptians were killed as well as six foreigners -- two Russians, a German child, a Swiss national, a Yemeni and a Hungarian.

The attacks, the third such bombings on the same tourist-packed coastline in 18 months, also left 58 Egyptians and 32 foreigners wounded.

INTERNATIONAL NEWS ANALYSIS by Toby Westerman

"COMMUNIST MEXICO?"
March 11, 2006

ARTICLE SNIPPET: "Nearly 15 years after the collapse of the USSR, America could encounter what would have been unthinkable during the Cold War - a hostile, communist nation on our southern border. If the plans of the Marxist president of Venezuela, Hugo Chavez, are successful, America's neighbor to the south will become a virtual enemy camp.

For the past five years, Chavez has sent money and agents to Mexico to finance and infiltrate local political groups on the left, according to a Mexican news daily The goal is ideological -- pro-Chavez operatives want to dominate the increasingly powerful left wing in Mexico.

The Chavez strategy is in a critical phase. The Mexican presidential election is scheduled for July 2, 2006, and the favored candidate to win is Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, a leftist who is currently leading his closest opponent, Felipe Calderon, by over ten percentage points."

From Russia With Arms
The American Spectator ^ | 5/2/2006 | Robert T. McLean

Posted on 05/01/2006 11:49:59 PM PDT by neverdem

WASHINGTON -- The Cold War may be over, but relations between the United States and Russia are slowly begging to freeze over once again. Nowhere has this become more evident than in our dealings with the Islamic Republic of Iran. While the United States and its European allies remain committed to ensuring that Tehran will not acquire the capability to produce a nuclear weapon, Russia maintains its opposition -- along with China -- against any use of sanctions or the threat of force. This has damaged efforts to convince the Iranian regime that serious consequences can result from noncompliance. However, the current situation in Iran is only one element in a comprehensive Russian strategy that seeks to boost its defense industry and undermine its geopolitical rivals.

The Russian economy remains largely dependent on weapons sales. When the Soviet Union collapsed, Russia's vital defense industry faced an enormous crisis. Not only would domestic spending be decreased, but exports to friendly regimes would no longer be necessary in many cases. As a result, even after enormous downsizing in the Russian defense industry -- an estimated 2.5 to 6.1 million lost their jobs between 1991 and 1995 -- by 1996, the sector was working at a capacity of only about 10 percent of its potential. Thus, to maintain the country's military industrial complex the Kremlin has taken on the role of the world's weapons supplier. From Algeria and Venezuela to Syria and Iran, Moscow displays few reservations to arming any regime that can help fuel its defense industry.

The well-publicized sale of 29 Tor-M1 missile systems to Iran provides a glimpse into the vast arena of advanced weapons being transferred to the world's most dangerous rogue regimes. These mobile air defense systems are capable of destroying both aircraft and cruise missiles and were...

"Chavez, Castro Political Alliance Grows With Bolivian Entry"
By Howard Williams
CNSNews.com Correspondent
May 01, 2006

ARTICLE SNIPPET: "(CNSNews.com) - Venezuela's Hugo Chavez and Cuba's Fidel Castro added a third amigo to their dream of a broad-based alliance of nationalist Latin American governments this weekend with the signing of a treaty with Bolivia to join the so-called Bolivarian Alternative for the Americas (ALBA).

The agreement, signed in Havana during a visit to the Cuban capital by Chavez and Bolivian President Evo Morales, came on the first anniversary of the launching of the ALBA idea by Chavez and Castro.

The buzz in Havana was that ALBA has now become a viable economic model to fend off the U.S.-sponsored Free Trade of the Americas (FAA) plan, which critics claim would unfairly benefit of American-owned multinationals and threaten Latin American economic development.

Although not mentioned publicly, Cuban officials were privately predicting that Peru would be the next member of ALBA, following the May 28 presidential run-off election between nationalist Ollanta Humala and socialist Alan Garcia.

Both men have opposed a U.S.-Peru free trade agreement, which was ratified last month in the midst of the ongoing election campaign."
