The News & Observer
Tom Farris had previous heart problems, according to a friend.

RALEIGH, N.C. (April 21) - A defense lawyer was arguing a drunken driving case when he fell on the courtroom floor and died of an apparent heart attack, officials and friends said.

Bailiffs and a police officer tried to administer CPR immediately after 57-year-old Tom Farris collapsed Thursday in the Wake County courthouse. Emergency personnel arrived less than six minutes later.

*shrugs* No one's perfect and I am sure he had some critics.

I am not sure of his politics.
There was a Farris from Wilson who was appointed as a judge by our (Dem) Governor Easley recently, though.

People do not realize what kind of a high stress environment a trial is. Lawyers may look calm but you mind is always racing.

Condolences to the family.

VERY funny. Thanks for the smile.
I have a hard time feeling sorry for a lawyer who takes cases defending drunk drivers.
Aren't there enough cases to keep him in clean shirts without these a-holes?

Does his client still have to pay for the representation?

No, I'm a caring human being.

I suppose someone has to be.

What a horrible title to the article.

It's the original title, not mine.

Does his client still have to pay for the representation?

Probably. The arrangement was undoubtedly that he would defend his client to the death.

You mean defending those assholes who are merely ACCUSED of driving drunk?

Ever hear of the presumption of innocence? Proof beyond a reasonable doubt? Or maybe the Sixth Amendment right to counsel? Guess not.

The whole idea behind CPR isn't to restart the heart (that's what a portible defibrulator is for) is to keep oxygen flowing through the body to prevent brain damaged. The window for restating the heart for the PD is 4 minutes. (This according to my AHA first aid training.....)

Did you ever, just once, stop to consider that someone may actually be innocent? And that our Constitution allows criminal defendants to be represented by an attorney? I am sick of the "I hate all lawyers" attitude. Just wait until you need one. Hope you get the worst one!

It's my opinion that the 'drunk driving specialists' are pretty much the bottom of the barrel, attorneywise.

This does fall under the "strangest reason for a mistrial" catergory

In the abscence of rapid defibrillation the success rate of CPR is extremely low. The new defibrillators have saved many lives and should be in all public places, such as courthouses. In fact, they are becoming so inexpensive that they will probably be in most private homes in the not too distant future.
