The old song lyrics “I need a place to hide away” traditionally have applied to the bathroom in conventional culture.
It was the one comfort zone in which to be alone.

The New York Times says attitudes about privacy are changing, and cutting-edge bathrooms have translucent glass or acrylic walls that make the interior visible from other rooms.
Joel Sanders, an architect and professor of architecture at Yale, has designed several see-through bathrooms. The shame about the body is not a factor for many clients, he told the Times. Ideas about privacy are more relaxed.
Some homeowners want no walls. One family put portholes in the door. Another used a blue glass through which only shadowy figures are visible.
The arrangement can be a problem for guests. The answer is two bathrooms or short visits.
I painted a bed/bath for a couple of gays in Ohio- no door to the bath but a roll-down steel fire door between the bedroom and the rest of the house.
But that does not make it a good thing. I would like larger yard space separating me from my neighbors, so don't be telling me that I have less privacy in the bathroom.
Thank you. This made me laugh out loud. When we were children and would do something really stupid or crass, my mother would say the same: "Were you raised by WOLVES?!" in exactly that tone of voice.

I've seen the same thing, but the commode is usually in a separate room with a door. At least it is in new homes here in Sacramento. I guess we're still old-fashioned enough to not inflict our bodily functions on others.
I took the area in my new house designed for a large "walk around" master bathroom and designed two, matching "his" and "her" bathrooms with pocket doors from each to a separate whirlpool tub room. Everyones happy.
There are some bodily functions that should not be viewed smelled by anyone else.

If you're thinking of buying stock in translucent bathroom materials, stick with gypsum drywall and stink pipes, 'cause they are going to be around for a long time yet to come.

Well, the toilet wasn't in full view from the main bedroom it was in a separate area OUT of view...but no door, actually, it had a door, but I had French doors...so it might as well have had no doors. Any there really couples who care if their spouses see them on the toilet?
High end homes often have bathroom suites off the master with no doors between. However, most feature private doored toilets, but leave the sink and bathing features open. I think most of the freepers on this thread are imagining that the toilets are also open to bedroom view, which would be unusual.

Well, of course not...
We have a blasted window (46"x46") right over the bathtub ... grrr ... we have it covered in window fog stuff, a bamboo shade and a black curtain.
I don't want bathroom privacy because I'm ashamed of my body any more than I want financial privacy because I'm ashamed of my bank balance. It's simply noone's business but mine. Why are people unable to grasp this concept?
