[San Francisco] 10,000 resume the battle cry - Immigrant rights marchers turn out in big numbers;

archbishop denounces enforcement-heavy House bill -

A coalition of Bay Area religious leaders including San Francisco Archbishop George Niederauer joined forces with about 10,000 protesters Sunday in denouncing a House of Representatives bill that would make illegal immigration a felony.

Calling for a more humane approach to immigration legislation, as is proposed in bills the Senate is to resume debating this week, Niederauer and the other leaders gathered near the steps of the Mission Dolores Basilica for an interfaith prayer service with mostly Latino Catholics. At the same time, protesters gathered in nearby Dolores Park for San Francisco's largest immigrants' rights rally so far this year and prepared to march to the Federal Building.

"It's time for the government to stop picking on our immigrants," said the Rev. Norman Fong of Chinatown Presbyterian Church.

Rabbi Stephen Pearce of San Francisco's Temple Emanu-El told of his grandfather's arrival in the United States.

"He learned three things: One, the streets were not paved with gold; two, they were not paved at all; and three, he had to pave them," Pearce said.

The Rev. Gloria del Castillo, pastor of Good Samaritan Episcopal Church in San Francisco, and Buddhist representative Kyin Yee Daw also showed support for Niederauer as he read a joint statement.

Immigration reforms the leaders proposed include "giving undocumented workers and their families a just path to lawful permanent residence and citizenship" and "allowing families torn apart by immigration to reunite."

In an interview after the prayer service, the archbishop spoke about the House bill, which passed in December and has spurred protests across the country since March.

"Some of the recent legislation coming from the House has been very shortsighted and even mean-spirited," he said.

Wait a minute. We are not supposed to help free the oppressed of the world, until they show up on our door step?

Before the Catholic bashing starts, how about the Southern Baptists who are also spreading the Gospel to illegal aliens.

According to some's rhetoric on FR shouldn't these Baptist churches be shut down since the majority of their congregants are illegal aliens.

Why are the Teamsters there?

To further the cause of social justice for the working man and to show solidarity with their Hispanic brethren.

That same Teamsters truck was in the '06 Quake Anniversary Parade on Tuesday. I guess the Teamsters want illegal alien drivers taking over all of their runs for $5.00/hour. ;)

Dane, most on Free Republic are aware of your agenda as a spokesman for amnesty and open borders.

Sorry, but it's not the same. Spreading the Gospel is not what is bringing these people her, and radicalizing them. Some Catholic churches are involved in a misguided "underground railroad". We know they are very involved in the protests and of course they are lobbying the legislature for open borders.

I denounce any "religious leader" who extols the "virtue" of anyone breaking into another country to demand "rights."

Those "religious leaders" need to go to the country that is sending us everyone they "will not care for", stand on the highest platform and denounce the leaders of that country for not caring for it's own citizens.

These so-called "religious leaders" need to open their own Bibles and read the words of the my Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, when he said, "Render unto Caesar, that which is Caesar's."If these so-called "religious leaders" truly cared for the people whose "rights" are not being secured here, they would leave immediately for the countries and minister to the poor and indigent masses there - not encourage them to come here illegally and demand "rights.".

The fact is that the only "rights" that these ILLEGAL ALIENS are entitled to is humane treatment, when caught and lovingly but firmly returned to their countries of origin.

The cold hard facts are that if America gives in to all of the demands of those who come here illegally, we will soon be unable to care for our own.

Some of these "religious leaders" who have never worked a real job, know nothing of the hardships that their own congregations face paying taxes to "care for" the illegals forced upon them and then to be told by their "religious leaders" that these illegal aliens have "rights" to which their own congregations do not have is sickening and non-biblical. This is a perversion of Christianity!

If these people wanted to get their message out, they really should write the signs in ENGLISH! Wait a second, that's right, that really wouldn't be part of their culture!

Isn't it interesting that Archbishop George Niederauer and his Collegial cohorts in the Hierarchy of the Catholic Church took over 50 or 60 years to come to the aid of the Children abused by their crimi nal perverted Priests.

And then only when they were prised out of their cowardice and deceit by the Secular newspapers in Boston.

They are still Fighting the courts, as in the case of Phoney Mahoney in Los Angeles.

They are all a bunch of disgusting creeps as Leaders.

Teaching people to disobey the law is not how I learned the rules of Catholicism by real catholics.

Why are the Teamsters there?

Because surprise, surprise, the Union leadership doesn't really give a flying fig about their membership. They just see a potentially huge new pool of recruits they can sign up and fleece for money and political clout.
