Iran 'will harm U.S. interests if attacked' Supreme leader Ayatollah Khameini issues warning

Iran will harm U.S. interests anywhere in the world if the United States launches an attack on the Islamic Republic, Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said Wednesday. "The Americans should know that if they assault Iran their interests will be harmed anywhere in the world that is possible," he was quoted as saying by a state television announcer. "The Iranian nation will respond to any blow with double the intensity," the leader added. Iran has been referred to the U.N. Security Council for possible action over its nuclear program, which Western countries say is a smokescreen for building an atomic bomb. Tehran denies the charge. The United States has said it wants a diplomatic solution to the stand-off, but has not ruled out a military strike. Iran's nuclear energy chief headed to 11th-hour talks at the International Atomic Energy Agency on Wednesday but the move looked too late to decisively alter an imminent IAEA report to the U.N. Security Council. Gholamreza Aghazadeh was due at the agency's Vienna complex two weeks after IAEA chief Mohamed ElBaradei, in a rare visit to Tehran, was rebuffed in requests that Iran "pause" its uranium enrichment drive and address world doubt about its nuclear aims. Western powers suspect Iran's professed goal to generate nuclear energy for its economy is a smokescreen for a covert atomic bomb project. But the Security Council is deeply split over whether and how fast to pursue sanctions against Iran.

This at least proveds that Ahmadinajad is merely speaks for Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who is calling the shots.

Is there anyone in their right mind who thinks economic sanctions, even if the could be agreed upon, would have the slightest effect on Iran? Like France and China won't buy Iranian oil?

This United Nations tact is a politically correct waste of time. Castro has been defying the United States Economic embargo for over 45 years by the way.

The Ayatollah is old and will be dying soon. What a better way to go out then with a nuke bomb on Israel and American interests (cities).

Heard they were afraid of President Bush. They're waiting for weak-kneed, PC-lovin', America-hating, Dem to win the White House.

Isn't threatening to strike non-strategic targets the precise definition of terrorism. Axis of Evil indeed.

Well, they are waiting for us to attack them, then they will lower the boom on the United States.

Guess the only way to find out is to try it ..

Iran has learned how to manipulate our gas prices and is toying with us. One missle or rocket at any ship in the gulf and oil prices will soar. I predict they are saving this for later in the hot summer months.

One Ayatollah will be replaced by a younger perhaps more virulent one.

All we can really do is to goad them into doing something that warrants their ruination. Nothing else will work.

I'm afraid there is a lot of suffering on the horizon for millions of people...both physically and economically.

All of their rhetoric and jumping up and down to be noticed reminds me that great book by Dr Suess, “Horton Hears a Who.”

The thing is that Iran knows that Dubya is politically very weak and doesn't have the personal credibility (now) to lead the USA into another war in the Mid East.

The USA can't do anything about Iran right now.

Bush has lost his nerve.

The Mullahs think he is weak, based on his blinking yesterday on oil/SPR, we can't even handle $75/oil.

This is a failure of leadership and will be his legacy.

Which is exactly why he should act. Bush is in command of the troops. He isn't up for re-election and this is one genie that we simply cannot allow out of the bottle.

A President is a leader, not a ruler. Dubya's leadership is severely compromised. That can change (and I expect it will) but right now, he doesn't have the leadership nor the moral authority for another military adventure while public confidence is very low on his ability to handle the military adventure he is currently in (Iraq).
