MEXICO CITY (Reuters) - Owning marijuana, cocaine and even heroin will no longer be a crime in Mexico if the drugs are carried in small amounts for personal use, under legislation passed by the Congress.

Police will not penalize people for possessing up to 5 grams of marijuana, 5 grams of opium, 25 milligrams of heroin or 500 milligrams of cocaine, under a bill passed by senators late on Thursday and earlier approved by the lower house.

People caught with larger quantities of drugs will be treated as narcotics dealers and face increased jail terms under the plan.

The government says the measure allows police to focus on major drug dealers, and President Fox is expected to sign it into law.

If it is legal in Mexico, can you cross the US border with 5 grams?

Scales often, at least in my experience the breath test, are moved UP or DOWN depending if you have some official documents. Like the ones you get at the bank.

In Cabo you sit on the beach and the Vende's walk up and down all day and you can buy anything, and I mean anything you want.

This is simply great news. In fact, it's the best news I've had today - now not only can we send the illegals back home, we can also encourage all of our druggies to move to Mexico and do drugs legally!!!

So under 5 grams of pot would be like a 1/4 oz., right? That's pretty decent. You'd like to buy in larger quantity, though. 5 grams is more than enough for just walking around. Back in college, I mean, by observation.

Hmmm... One of my co-workers suddenly decided to take an unscheduled week's vacation and visit Mexico this past weekend. Couldn't figure it, 'til I read this article.

Hey, Mayhico, how about taking in some of our druggies? We'll gladly ship them to you to take care of...for life. Just remember what happened to the Roman Empire after it's years of decadence. Your fate awaits.

You can bring in a hell of a lot more if you have the Mexican military helping.

Concentrate on major dealers my butt.

Quite possibly the worst policy Mexico could adapt. But great for the cartels.

Pretty strange that Mexico has to lead the way in regaining rationality about drugs.

How on earth is losing black-market prices and monopoly control "a great thing" for the cartels?

Not for Mexico. They'll just sell it here and make a Mexican bundle. We'll have to start building walls around the American schools next!
