L.A. CARDINAL (MAHONEY) TO JOIN (ILLEGAL) IMMIGRATION MARCH IN BARRI0
The Houston Chronicle ^ | 1 May 2006 | Michael Martinez

Posted on 05/01/2006 4:59:09 AM PDT by MeneMeneTekelUpharsin

LOS ANGELES - That Cardinal Roger Mahony attended grammar school here, in the modest St. Charles Borromeo parish more than a half-century ago, was a fact lost on many parishioners on a recent Sunday. But little else is forgotten about the neighborhood-kid-done-good whose national profile has been on the rise, largely for his willingness to take on controversy, especially his stand on illegal immigration. Mahony, 70, who leads the nation's largest Roman Catholic archdiocese, is scheduled to participate in today's planned mass protests in Los Angeles, except not the one to be held downtown.

Rather, after celebrating noon Mass at Los Angeles' Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels today, Mahony will march in a barrio. Mahony has often been said to have a common touch among Latino immigrants. When newly ordained in the 1960s, Mahony sought a remote post in rural Fresno, Calif., where he worked with immigrant farm laborers and their then-leader, Cesar Chavez.

"Well, the church has to fill the collection plates somehow"

You got it.

Not really. I do know that John Paul II grew up in a communist country. He survived a communist regime. And that Russian Communists tried to assassinate him. Mahoney has knowingly sided with communists and breached the Church/State boundary. ...very different relationships IMHO.

>>Mahony's position is not the official policy of the Catholic Church. Mahony is in error on Catholic immigration policy, which acknowledges that immigration laws must be respected.<<

Bears repeating.

I am a practicing Catholic who lives in Los Angeles. I detest Cardinal Mahony and I know many other Catholics feel that way, too. I understand why you (and others) think Mahony is motivated to secure Mexicans for the Catholic Church in LA, but the reality is even worse: Mahony isn't doing this for the sake of the Church; he's doing this for the sake of the spotlight. He doesn't care about the Catholic Church except insofar as it provides him with a means to be the center of attention.

I was challenging EM's statement that non-Ex Cathedra papal pronouncements need not be obeyed.

One, Mahony is not the Pope. Two, the immigration issue is not a religious one, so Mahony's opinion is not binding to any extent on Catholics.

Cardinal Mahoney's Legacy

Cardinal Roger M. Mahony, rebuffed Monday by the U.S. Supreme Court in his request to keep two accused priests' personnel files private, now must turn those documents over to a grand jury and face the growing possibility that he may soon be forced to relinquish more confidential church records involving alleged sexual abuse.

Attorneys for the Los Angeles archbishop had argued that all communication between a bishop and his priests — including that about allegations of sexual abuse and resulting investigations — was protected under the 1st Amendment. In declining to hear his case, the Supreme Court effectively let stand a California appellate court decision that rejected the constitutional claim.

You despise Roman Catholics, so anything the Catholic Church does is a "religious conflict" to you.

You have spouted off about one too many times. This has nothing to do with anti-catholicism. It has to do with truth vs. error. When someone is doing something in error, it can't be defended. You or any of your catholic friends can NOT get away with actions just because you're catholic. Anyway, this entire mess is about to blow up. For that reason, I'm being real careful about my responses. A little less talk and a lot more action.

Job security for Cardinal Mahoney. He knows most of them are catholics, and wants to keep his job til he is no longer.

This is going to give some Catholics reason to leave the church IMO.

It has to do with truth vs. error.

Of course, YOU have the truth, right?

You're really a piece of work, Mene. Any excuse to jab the Catholic Church.

If any Catholic leaves the Church over illegal immigration, they had little Faith to begin with.

Interesting (and telling) that Mahoney worked with Cesar Chavez. I wonder if Mahoney kicked the sh*t out of illegal aliens along with Chavez and his "Wet Line". Mahoney is despicable. And the laughable irony here in El Paso is that the border highway was renamed "Cesar Chavez Memorial Highway". Bunch of assclowns.........

I got the impression from your post that you thought the Church -as a whole- was a supporter of communism.
I think if you read more about JPII, and the Church's stance towards communism you would see there has always been and always will be great resistance from the Church towards communism.
By "Church" I mean the pope together with the Magisterium as a whole.
Mahoney is one cardinal - one small part of the Magisterium. He does not represent the Magisterium, and he has often supported the "wrong" side of many issues...meaning - he has gone against Church teaching.

If you do a google search on other cardinals, say, like ....Arinze - you will see a cardinal faithful to the teachings of the teacher.

Even Jesus had to deal with Judas.

I don't see any Cardinals popping up on TV concerning the southern Mexican border regarding their murders, rapes and robberies of all those trying to get across there.

Mohoney is a hypocrite and a political opportunist, I think he is the exact kind of person that had Christ knocking over money changer tables at the Temple.

Well said. This one rejects him and his ilk. They are morally bankrupt hypocrites. All the fancy trappings that go with their fiefdoms cannot disguise the fact that they are lowlife SCUM.

"Job security for Cardinal Mahoney. He knows most of them are catholics, and wants to keep his job til he is no longer."

That isn't how job security works in the Church.
Ticking off the pope is not good for job security. He was lucky JPII was such a patient man. We will see if Benedict runs out of patience or not.
Either way...they turn in their resignations when they hit 75, and the pope can decide whether or not to "accept" it.

"If any Catholic leaves the Church over illegal immigration, they had little Faith to begin with."

Or - if any catholic leaves the Church because they become disillusioned by Mahoney must have a screw loose.
I mean - if Mahoney hasn't already disappointed them by now - then where have they been?
And anyone who has given the catechism a cursory glance knows Mahoney doesn't adhere to catholic teaching.

"kicked the sh*t out of illegal aliens along with Chavez"

Thank you for confirming one of my suspicions that Cesar Chavez was in fact AGAINST illegal immigration. The left of course chooses to disregard that inconvenient little fact.
