Jon Stewart Defends Colbert's Dinner Speech
Editor & Publisher ^ | May 2, 2006 | Staff

NEW YORK Probably to no one's surprise, Jon Stewart, host of Comedy Central's "Daily Show," hailed the performance of his stablemate Stephen Colbert at Saturday night's White House Correspondents dinner. Colbert's lampooning of the president and the press has generated a good deal of praise and criticism.

"It was balls-alicious," Stewart said. "Apparently he was under the impression that they'd hired him to do what he does every night on television" -- that is, make fun of conservatives, public officials, and the press in the guise of an O'Reillyesque talk show host.

"We've never been prouder of him, but HOLY ----," Stewart added.

He also described the annual dinner as "where the President and the press corps consummate their loveless marriage."

Colbert then followed Stewart, on his own show, "The Colbert Report," describing the "honor of appearing" at the big dinner. He said the room was full of "power players," so he "fit right in."

"It was balls-alicious," Stewart said.

I am so tired of the culture of 14 year old boys....

And Imus did exactly what he did every day on his show, too.

Especially as my employees HAVE to laugh at my jokes.

Only to you face. Behind your back, they're they one's making the jokes --at your expense. (Pun intended)

I didn't actually hear him, but the clips I heard on some of the radio shows were embarrassingly unfunny.

And even that sympathetic audience couldn't muster a laugh.

Didn't waste my time with it. Don't watch Letterman or Maher either.
Would rather chew sand or watch Helen T. take a sitz bath.

Fair enough, but then again, what does qualify one to comment on political matters? It's not as if Rush or Hannity have M.A.'s in political science.

Ah, we see eye to eye! I was a school teacher. I listened to this kind of *humor* day in and day out. It's tiresome (at least to me). It's like laughing at someone slipping on a banana peel or making fun of the fat kid in class.

I haven't been this pleased about a bombing since Doolittle did Tokyo. Hmm, I think we performed much better in 1945. Dreseden, Tokyo and the twin atomic blasts were certainly impressive. Still, I'll concede that the Doolittle raid did have more panche.

"I missed the part where he made fun of the press"

Here's what he said:

"But the rest of you, what are you thinking, reporting on NSA wiretapping or secret prisons in eastern Europe? Those things are secret for a very important reason: they're super-depressing. And if that's your goal, well, misery accomplished. Over the last five years you people were so good -- over tax cuts, WMD intelligence, the effect of global warming. We Americans didn't want to know, and you had the courtesy not to try to find out. Those were good times, as far as we knew.

"But, listen, let's review the rules. Here's how it works: the president makes decisions. He's the decider. The press secretary announces those decisions, and you people of the press type those decisions down. Make, announce, type. Just put 'em through a spell check and go home. Get to know your family again. Make love to your wife. Write that novel you got kicking around in your head. You know, the one about the intrepid Washington reporter with the courage to stand up to the administration. You know - fiction!

No, they pretty much laugh in my face.

Their running joke is the engineers/owners (we are guys and outnumbered 3 to 1) should file a harrassment claim for hostile workplace. They even wrote up a list of greivances for me to air for Festivus.

Yeah, how about that. Colbert wasn't there to exhibit his balls, he was there to make people laugh! His source of material was a President at 35% approval and the media. How can you miss? I've been to funerals that provided more laughs. Johnny Carson would have gotten more laughs and he's been dead for sometime now.

Oh yeah, it's so brave to show up at a roast (or anywhere these days) and make fun of W! Really, lets give him credit for that, shall we?

Remember IPUS suggesting the Peter Jennings had an intern under his desk.

IPUS was merciless but it was the wrong venue for such crass insults.

I think colbert is funny. I dont agree with him all the time, but when he attacks his guests he attacks their liberal views and makes fools of them even though the people in the crowd are definitely democratic voters.

Hey its called humor and you have to be able to laugh at yourself once in awhile.

I find Colbert & Stewart about as funny as Whoopi Goldberg... swinging a bottle of whine on a stage in a drunken stupor. Both of them are smarmy, snot-nosed adolescent-adults... about as fit to comment on the news(they are NOT comedians) as they are to perform brain surgery.
