ABC pulls 'Commander in Chief'

LOS ANGELES, May 2 (UPI) -- ABC TV has put an abrupt term limit on its freshman drama, "Commander in Chief."

The network Tuesday announced it was pulling the Geena Davis series for the rest of May sweeps and running the newsmagazine "Primetime" in its 10 p.m. Thursday slot for the final three weeks of the season, Zap2it.com reported.

The series started as one of the most-watched in the fall and Davis won a Golden Globe for her portrayal of the first female U.S. president.

However, two extended breaks and behind-the-scenes changes as well as a schedule move from Tuesday to Thursday all contributed to a deep slide in ratings.

"Commander's" three Thursday night shows have averaged about 7.5 million viewers, which means half the viewers who tuned in during the fall are now focused elsewhere, Zap2it.com said.

ABC said it would probably air the final three episodes sometime during the summer

Subtext dude, subtext! And the subtext, which had nothing to do with the melodramatic plots that could've been used on General Hospital just as well, the subtext and the main goal of this "entertainment" was to prep America for a female POTUS. Transparent and obvious to everyone above your otherwise perfectly reasonable post!

If you never watched it, how do you know it was a piece of garbage?

When the early background story came out that Mackenzie Allen was a conservative who was not a Creationist, word went out from a thousand Fundamentalist pulpits across the land that the character was "a liberal" and the Faithful would imperil their Immortal Souls if they watched it.

Yeah, that's what did it in. Sure. Okay.

And they're surprized about this why??

I don't understand - it seems like most of the uber liberal agenda re movies, lib talk shows, etc, now go down in flames. No one watches or listens. So HOW is "W's" approval rating so low? Or is it, really -

The only thing that's having rave reviews and audiences this year in "Flight 93" -

It seems like the silent majority is still conservative...

time for the silent majority to stand up and SHOUT -

So, I guess this means America is not ready for a liberal female president, after all.

Too soon.

It's just too soon!

Well, moving a show around and frequent breaks don't help to keep a new audience. But the breaks seem to have been mainly due to the original producer trying to do everything on the show and falling way behind in filming episodes. The postponement of the remaining episodes to the summer is probably due more to ABC trying to finish strong for the year with the final sweeps starting.

Of course, the sheer silliness of the show is clearly obvious even to the Hillary-loving executives at ABC.

Thank you for your contrarian point of view. I had not had time to watch the program (I dont watch much television at all these days), so I had assumed, from reading here on FR, that the show was simply liberal spew. Your post has corrected that, and has served to remind me how easy it is to make judgements based on the judgements of biased people, and how that can easily be wrong.

This can't possibly have anything to do with the quality of the show. Obviously it's because Americans are sexist.

The writing, acting, and basic premise had nothing to do with the deep slide in ratings, really.

Who still reads Reader's Digest?

I skim through it while waiting at the doctor's office. I only read the little funny stories though. My doctor doesn't keep me waiting long.

House has won this battle. And those silly people at ABC thought they could sink it.

In addition to the fact that the show was crap.

Actually it was pretty good for about 4-5 weeks. Not great but not bad. I tuned out when they turned form political intrigue to Teenager Problems and the Tough Job of Being First Man. Boring - Boring - Boring. Another failed lib experiment. RIP another Hillary Initiative.

I love how the left creates excuses for a bad Hitlary commericial failure.

This was a Hitlary infomercial from the word go. It was produced by clintonistas, performed by leftists, and a failure because the message was PURE leftist.

If failed because it sucked and the suits knew it before it aired the first promotional commerical. The only reason it lasted was because it was specific to a clintonista power effort.

If any other show it would never have seen a nanosecond of airtime let alone a pilot.

They actually bashed Hitlery several times. "Mac" wasn't a liberal, she was an independent and more conservative than anything. I did finally get fed up with the teenager parts of the story line, but liked the overall contrast with the President's duties as President and as mother, especially to the little girl.

It was good to see Polly Bergen, too. And I liked Donald Sutherland's character (as a man you love to hate) and Natasha Henstridge or whatever her name is - one of the former SheSpies, my favorite late night "camp" show to laugh at.

What's wrong with prepping the U.S. for a female president? Condi is a female and she's a possible POTUS. Commentators have also mentioned Kay Bailey Hutchison. Libby Dole made a stab at it but she's was too much the little Southern belle for my taste. Why do we always assume it's only a Democrat like Hillary who would get the boost from a show like Commander in Chief?

Actually, the Geena Davis character was rather pleasant, polite, and compassionate. She didn't resemble the Hildabeast at all, IMHO.
