The United States of Mexico

Sometimes, when I hear people objecting to illegal aliens on the grounds that they represent a security risk, I find myself shaking my head. To me, that sounds as if they wouldn’t have a problem with America’s porous southern border if only it weren’t for the tragic events of 9/11. The implication is that we wouldn’t object to all those millions of people sneaking into our country, except for those few bad apples who might be looking to level Los Angeles with a suitcase bomb. These folks are entitled to their opinion, but they certainly don’t speak for me. My objection is based on the fact that I don’t like unwelcome guests. I don’t like them in my house and I don’t want them in my country.

Because we’re speaking, for the most part, about Mexicans, that opens me up to a charge of racism. So be it. In a society in which such repulsive characters as Barry Bonds, Cynthia McKinney, Jesse Jackson, Al Sharpton, Harry Belafonte, and O.J. Simpson, deflect all manner of criticism by attributing it to white racists, the word has lost virtually all meaning.

I happen to like Mexicans. Living here in the San Fernando Valley, I interact with them all the time. Several of them live on my block. I find them, by and large, to be a virtuous people. They tend to be hard- working, religious, family-oriented, and friendly. Although I’m not a big fan of refried beans and rice, I do like their music. Unlike the anti-social, unaesthetic, dreck that usually passes for music these days, most Mexican songs seem to be love ballads. What’s more, thanks to Church influence, their young people tend to get married and to raise their kids together. I do wish that, as a group, the youngsters were as enthusiastic about attending classes as they are about ditching class to take part in public demonstrations.

All of that said, I am in favor of building a wall, digging a moat, doing whatever it takes to keep illegals out.

I understand that President Bush has a problem dealing with this problem. There are businesses, after all, that depend on a constant stream of unskilled workers. I say constant because we already have several million illegal aliens in America -- surely enough to pick our lettuce, bus our tables, wash our cars, and put the little mints on our hotel pillows. But this is the land of opportunity, and people don’t want to remain very long at the bottom of the food chain.

So George Bush promotes a worker program that is so idiotic, Republicans wish that a Democrat had come up with it, so they’d feel better about ridiculing it. Suggesting that after working in this country for a number of years, Mexicans will simply return to their country, and take their place at the back of the immigration line is perhaps the single stupidest, most naïve, notion I’ve ever heard. Even a four-year-old would recognize Bush’s brainstorm as amnesty in sheep’s clothing.

People who disagree with me on this issue point out that if I were a Mexican, I’d also do whatever I could to get into this country. And they’re right. Walk across the desert? You bet! To get to America, I’d walk across ground glass. But, so what? What I would or wouldn’t do is no basis upon which to form national policy.

It’s high time that the president stopped pandering to special interests, and, instead, started acting like a man who can afford to have principles. Otherwise, what’s the point of being a lame duck? It seems to me there should be some upside to never again having to worry about being re-elected.

If George Bush drew a line in the sand -- and then built a wall on that line -- I’m betting he’d even see his poll numbers bounce up. As a result of which, he might actually stop being a political liability as the GOP gears up for the congressional elections this November.

If Bush asked for my advice, I’d tell him it’s time he stopped listening to President Fox and started listening to the American people. And then I’d point out to him that no place in the Constitution does it say it’s his responsibility to cure Mexico’s crime and unemployment problems.

Mr. Prelutsky, you are indeed clever with a sentence.

Amnesty for illegal aliens is one of the few areas in which I disagree with President Dubya. He doesn't lack political courage, but in this case, I think he tried to blaze a conciliatory path in order to produce a plan that would be approvable by the Congress (just my guesses here).

Another guess, If President Bush (citing polls, reaction to civil disobedience, fears of radical takeover of illegal organizations, or anything) decides to take a much firmer line on illegal aliens, his poll numbers would rise, and so would national unity.

This issue is like drilling in ANWR. Keep putting it off and see what happens. Getting those here on the books is a start and we need to start NOW.

Sometimes, when I hear California Republicans offering political advice I find myself shaking my head. Call me back when an pro-abortion, pro-homo, pro-immigrant, anti-gun pervert doesn't head the state ticket.

As I watched the protests and read the anti-american and communist signs from yesterday's rally, I kept asking myself "These are the people to whom the Senate wants to grant citizenship?"

They are just wrong--very, very wrong.

You are correct- He is either to stupid to understand this or he doesn't care- take your choice. I am a Bush supporter, because of the war on terror. His stance on ILLEGAL immigration is going to cost the republican party control of BOTH houses of Congress in 06, and the presidency in 08. His inaction on the border problem is probably a viable reason for his impeachment. Again, I am a Bush supporter.

Justice delayed is justice denied.

Action delayed is justice denied. You are right, they should have been drilling in ANWR 20 or more years ago.

Our elected "leaders" have put us in a very bad position. Time for them to go!

I get the feeling the President thinks he's Mexico's President instead of ours with his aping of Vicente Fox's policies.

"Day without Immigrants" Not So Bad

The May 1 boycott didn't appear to faze most Americans. Most weren't even aware there was a boycott. Others said they appreciated the lighter traffic. A few were frustrated with the "lack of understanding" of most of the illegal immigrants.

Ken Nada of Phoenix said he didn't know anything about the boycott. "I don't pay much attention to the news," said Nada. Living off of income from a trust fund set up by his grandfather, Nada said he spends most of his time getting stoned. "None of this stuff don't make no difference to me. My dealer is still working, so what do I care?"

Los Angeles resident Rodney King said he appreciated the faster work commute. "Usually it takes me an hour to get to work," said King. "Today, I got to work in half the time. I wish every day was a boycott."

In Chicago, Democratic campaign worker Howie Connum expressed frustration at his inability to get many of the protestors to register to vote. "These morons think that because they are here illegally and don't speak English that they shouldn't vote," said a fuming Connum. "I tell them that their votes are a way to safe guard their rights, but they have an overblown fear of getting caught. There's a basic lack of understanding about how the system works."

Boycott organizers' hopes of sending a message have produced a response that makes it difficult to determine whether the message was received as intended. "We were hoping that fear of unmowed lawns, unmade beds and unfried tacos would cause Americans to rethink their racist opposition to open borders," said Delictivo Abogar, one of the organizers of the Miami demonstration. "But I guess it will take more time before the importance of these essential services penetrates the thick gringo skulls of the Norte Americanos."

In related news, the United Front for the Liberation of Aztlan renewed its demand that the Mexican national anthem be played before all sporting events taking place in the states currently known as California, Nevada, Utah, Arizona and New Mexico. "For the time being, until we have reclaimed our land, both anthems can be played," said Hernando Cortes, spokesman for UFLA. "After that, we'll see."

Those are the people. Remember your President: "Family values don't stop at the Rio Grande." "They only want to do the jobs the American people don't want to do."

Should they go down this path each "Yea" vote of the Senate and the President should be removed from office and sentences to cleaning toilets in public university dorms.

Isn't there a crime in here somewhere by knowingly soliciting folks to commit voter fraud?
