WASHINGTON (AFP) - First Lady Laura Bush broke with husband President George W. Bush, saying she found nothing wrong with a new Spanish-language version of the US national anthem, "The Star-Spangled Banner."
"I don't think there's anything wrong with singing it in Spanish," Bush told CNN television in an interview.

They sound more like the Clintons everyday. If one won't the other will, just another way to cover all bases.
Knock another 5 to 8 points from Bush's poll numbers...
Except they called it 'OUR Anthem'.
Why not poll the French on how they would like to hear a German version of the French National Anthem (including some yrics).
I would really like to know if she would feel the same way if it was sung in Polish, German, Swahili, Korean, etc. Do any of these people actually believe in the culture that has given them so much anymore?
You mean like back when Hillary said she favored a Palestinian state?
Wow, remember when that used to be considered a radical notion? I shudder to think about what won't be considered radical five years from now.
But it's not just "singing it in Spanish", it's rewriting the lyrics to reflect a different philosophy.
Laura is to blame for the Harriet Myers fiasco, I am convinced.....and maybe she is holding Bushie back from going after the bad guys with full force!!

Want to bet this is a typical old media set up of Mrs. Bush, just like they set up her mother-in-law during the 1992 campaign. There is nothing wrong with singing the US national anthem is Spanish. There is something very wrong with singing some Spanish language song vaguely similar to the US national anthem to the tune of the US national anthem.
I bet you Mrs. Bush does not know the words in Spanish are
NOT a translation of the US national anthem but different words.
What a cluster.....
I'm in my 40's, I remember when we had Americans living in this Country. I remember being able to understand every word that was said because we all spoke English. I remember when we had Presidents that were American and looked out for our best interests...I'm pretty disgusted that my children have never known those days.
Ever been in a relationship, married, GF, BF, or even with friends, where you agreed on everything? If so, I'd like to hear about it.
Mrs. Bush definitely has her own opinions. I also don't believe President Bush said what he said for his "base", I think he really does not like the anthem in Spanish.
Waiting to see the first Freeper to tell her to STFU.
Exactly. I don't really care if it is sung in Swahili. But changing the lyrics is totally out. And, I don't want it sung in spanish at any school, sporting event, political event or any other public event.
Another big flush from the White House and the United States is the septic tank.
But i belive Mrs. Bush disagreed on abortion too .
.....and I am sooooooooo sick of that "we are a nation of immigrants" bs. I AM NOT AN IMMIGRANT! I was friggin born here and can trace ny ancestors back to the 1800's.
Heck every nation is a nation of immigrants if you go by their standards.
Jst another load of crap I am sick of hearing.
If you listen to her complete answer, she goes on to say the anthem should be done in English....but since America has people of other languages living here, it's ok to see it in another language.
She then compares it to seeing the words of "Amazing Grace" in the hymnbook---in English, but also written at the bottom in another language.
Her main emphasis when answering the question is the fact that it is the anthem of the United States and should be said in respect of the United States.
No....but I've got an idea....let's get the Anthem and out there in all those languages.....sheesh....my great grandparents came here from Germany (but, of course, they learned English, and rarely spoke German - except to swear in front of the grandkids.)
By pandering to these people, perhaps she's getting ready to deal with the realities of living in Dallas in '08, which will shortly be overrun with illegal Mexican aliens. Parts (the criminals are now surrounding and invading the formerly nice Northern areas of the city) are starting to look like the third world, with English store names or signs being very rare.
The Bushes (Arbustos) think this is good politics.
Uh, fyi ping.
Sounds like she is getting to be as incompetent as he already is.
Once again the MSM will manage to make a mountain out of a molehill. Sadder still is the fact that so many people will actually rise to the bait.
You got it!
I don't see anything wrong with the anthem in Spanish. There is a Christian Mission Group, Wycliff, whose whole method of work is to find a group that does not have the Bible translated into their language, translate it, and then present the published work.
Usually it takes years to do the job. Their thinking is...People, even people who know other languages, always respond best in their own language.
I was just now thinking it. Does that count? :p
My husband and I pretty much agree totally on everything, always have. We celebrate our 25th anniversary this month.
Neither are they. They are illegal aliens.
Mine go back to the 1700's on one side and Mayflower on the other and I have some Cherokee Indian thrown in for good measure... I am a red-blooded American! and I'm really teed off about them rewriting OUR anthem to suit their anti-war people... it seems the First Lady and Condi are in step with each other more than she and the President these days.
Yes thats the main difference.
I agree. I see nothing wrong with the President's opinion about wanting immigrants who choose to live in our country learn english and learn to sing our anthem in english. I also see nothing wrong with Mrs. Bush feeling that there's nothing wrong with people singing our anthem in a foreign language.
I want foreigners who become Americans to learn our language and respect our culture, including our national anthem, and yes, sing it in english when they can learn to do that. But for those who haven't learned english yet, I wouldn't be offended if they sang our anthem in their native tongue.
I think there's a big difference between that, and immigrants CHANGING THE WORDS to our anthem. Two totally different branches on the same tree, so to speak.
Related thought -- some people didn't like Jimi hendrix version of the Anthem either -- others loved it.
evenin'
One other related thought. At President Bush's 1st inauguaration, back when it still seemed possible to form some kind of workable bond with Mexican immigrants, the President had a Mexican pop singer do "America The Beautiful" in Spanish.
It was a great idea, and long, long ago. Better days for the conservative movement.
I have never been able to figure out what in Laura Bush's childhood gave her those mexican traditions and her affinity to mexico. Did she have a mexican nanny? I don't know.
However, it seems to me that Laura is almost more pro-mexican than George.
Well, well ... the women are for it and the men are agin' it. I'm beginning to sense that polling number show a slight rift along gender lines.
Why ? Can't she sing ?
Would you have a problem with someone reciting the Pledge of Allegiance in Spanish? No matter how you look at it, they would still be pledging to the Estados Unidos.
Why don't they just accept the 10 - 20 million onto their ranch since they love post-America so much?
Did you see the translation of the words they used?
I think the Bushes all weep at night that more third world nations don't border our country.
If it weren't for the context, I don't think it would matter to me personally. As long as it was a once in a blue moon thing. A way of pledging allegiance yet contributing their own voice to it.
That said, the context is completely wrong here. Not to mention the lyrics have been changed to sound like some communist workers' party march. Then we have these knuckleheads flying the Mexican flag, being here illegally, demanding rights, sucking the taxpayers and our hospitals dry, and they have the audacity to sing OUR national anthem in SPANISH!
I can't respect that in the slightest.
Why, BQ.....the 10-20 million are for the little people to enjoy, and pay for.
I've tried to find the "changed" version in English or Spanish.
Is it really "Changed", or just translated? Sometimes translation change word order in order to give CORRECT, NOT CHANGED Meaning.
I don't Know if that's what happened. Got Translation?
