US Secretary of State Condeleezza Rice has made a "bittersweet" phone call to Jack Straw and his successor as foreign secretary, Margaret Beckett. State Department spokesman Sean McCormack said "she had no better or closer colleague than Jack Straw".
He also said that Ms Rice looked forward to working with Mrs Beckett.

The original pushers of the Iraq War (at UN) are gone, Powell and Straw. Coincidentally, its cheif backers have 30-40 something approval ratings. Its a same such a just thing was so unpopular.
Powell never wants to fight a war, no matter how justified. What a strange general he is.
I'm surprised they didn't take up two paragraphs describing her attire. The whole article is a tad too Oprah-esque.
JACK NO MORE !
Well condi was pretty close to him.
that was the washington post describing her boots etc.
Be interesting to see how Condi gets along with a leftist harridan.
PING!
Beckett, the new British Foreign Secretary, will be full of herself, I'll bet. She'll walk in all tough and demanding, trying to score points with Gordon Brown so she can be kept on when Tony is purged by next Night of the Long Knives.
Poor woman; she'll forget that Condi's a bit too butch to be pushed around by some lapsed ideologue, I'll wager. Condi deals with Chicoms and Russians every day. A former CND lefty should be easy for Condi to handle after she's laid down the law at the first meeting.
She won't walk out so tough.
But you'll never know. Both of them will be all smiles.
As Condi always says, "power matters".
Be Seeing You,
Chris
Yes, the only reason to keep Blair is to stall Brown, a truly sinister character let alone the question why, in this day and age, the English should have a Scot as PM.
It's a common mistake to underestimate Margaret Beckett. She's a survivor ( the longest serving of any Labour minster), tough and nothing if not pragmatic.
"let alone the question why, in this day and age, the English should have a Scot as PM"
You're joking right? I mean, Gordon Brown ugh, but I feel obliged to be offended on Celtic grounds!
No offence !! It's just that the Scots and Welsh now have their own assemblies, in which any other MP can't vote but poor old England has no assembly in fact to even say English rather than British is frowned upon. Scots MPs are what keep the Labour mob in power - England itself having voted Tory last time.
Both the Scottish and Welsh assemblies are nothing more than a waste of time and money, but that's not really the point. The UK Parliament is exactly that, not the Parliament of England. You might as well say that a Lancastrian or Brummie should not be PM.
I am actually English, though have lived in Wales for a while now. Who do you think 'frowns upon' saying English rather than British? The two are not synonyms, so depends what you're talking about at the time.
I have noted the objections to any idea of an English assembly and yes I'm aware that Westminster is the UK gov't.
I believe the situation vis a vis the Scots & Welsh is referred to as "The Midlothian Question".
What's Welsh for "duck", bet it's not canard :)
