"that the personnel drop occurred under the Clinton administration and that Goss was in the processing of rebuilding."

Well Porter may be building up, but he sure as heck got rid of some of the Clintooon allies.

Wow, mabey Goss really did clean out the barn in a short time frame?

Wonder what employment numbers at State look like since January 2005?

Where did that 100,000 figure come from ?
There have NEVER been 100,000 CIA employees at any time in its existence !
That number so blatantly ridiculous that it makes not want to read the rest of the article.

I read a report at the time Goss was hired about one of the problems he was brought in to fix. It seems that the really competent CIA employees can resign, get hired by a contractor and begin working again at the CIA at a much higher salary.

The people who stay at the CIA are the incompetents who can only keep a job because of government regulations that restrict firing people.

Roberts said the number of CIA employees were reduced under the Clinton administration and since 9/11 they were being
built back up.

The CIA had too many uneeded cold war analysts at the time the cuts started (1993). Of course, no one actually got laid off or fired, it was all buyout and early retirement stuff.

Too bad no one realized that the first WTC bombing was a wake-up call. An agressive anti-terrorist campaign starting in 1993 would have certainly prevented 9/11.

I find no good news in any of this.

The CIA has proven its incompetence in some of the most glaring intelligence blindness in the history of the world.

Gathering accurate information seems to be a problem for them no matter what their size.

They have more money than many countries and can't find their asses with both hands.

I don't think you can fix a monstrous bureaucracy. It's just too big to manage or repair.

I cannot believe either of these numbers. The State Dept only has about 35000 staff. I bet the CIA has fewer. How could 25000 of any kind of Govt employees fade away without it being in the news.
