Illegal immigrants whose children are legal residents by birth fear seeing their families split up if some in Congress get their way.

Nearly two-thirds — an estimated 3 million — of all children of illegal immigrants are citizens, according to data compiled by the Pew Hispanic Center, a nonpartisan research group. "People think 'legals' live in this house and 'illegals' live in this house," said immigration attorney Carl Shusterman. "It's not usually that simple."

Families of mixed status have long lived with the threat of being divided, prompting undocumented parents to make strategic decisions about where to live, work and travel. But in recent months, as Congress has been wrestling with immigration issues, their anxiety level has risen.

Diana Hull, who runs Californians for Population Stabilization, said illegal immigrants give birth here to stake a claim in the country. "Of course this is a magnet," she said. "They come here obviously, deliberately to have a citizen child." Hull said children born of illegal immigrants should not have an automatic right to citizenship. Although she is sympathetic to the youngsters, she said, they are a potential drain on public services, and the state and the nation cannot afford them, let alone their families. "The impact on California is that citizen children [of illegal immigrants] add to the population growth," Hull said. "We can't sustain this kind of growth."

But parents who face deportation and use their citizen children as a defense rarely succeed. Under a legal change 10 years ago, parents were required to prove that their deportation would cause "exceptional and extremely unusual hardship" to the children.

Government dependent immigrant children = more "social service" costs = higher tax burden = fewer dollars in US citizen pockets = fewer children that Americans can afford to have and raise.

Illegals clearly see the US as a free lunch---they sneak in, park themselves in our towns, 20 families to a house, live off the fat of the land at our expense, and laugh in the face of our laws.

If someone out there knows the precise legal details, I was under the impression that the law clearly states that minor citizen children MUST accompany their illegal alien parents into deportation and can only come back when they turn 18.

If so, imagine the magical deterrent effect if ICE initiated deportation proceedings against a handful of such "mixed" families in every major city simultaneously.

Considering the panic and waves of hysteria among the illegal communities every time rumor of a crackdown or sweep gets started somewhere, such strategies could have a media-amplified effect far in excess of the number of people actually detained.

Congress might realize the "power" of those mexican flag-waving, white t-shirted hordes is built on sand.

"Illegal Aliens cost taxpayers $68 Billion annually in federal programs in 2002. Studies estimate that amnesty would increase that three fold.

Perhaps as high as 80% of the violent crime in Phoenix area involves illegal aliens (according to Chief Hurt and Mesa police violent crimes response team)

$311 Billion in uncollected taxes (Barron's study). $200 Billion annually in lost American wages. Native-born American men lost an average of $1700 in wages in 2000 due to US immigration policy (Harvard University).

Maricopa County Hospital loses over $2 million weekly on uncompensated care (largely do to illegal aliens) (2003, 77 border hospitals filed for bankruptcy).

Feds owe $25 million in uncompensated SCAAP costs just in Maricopa County, (1/3 of our federal prisons are illegal aliens).

Arizona spends over $800 million (K –12) annually to educate illegals.

Over half of AHCCCS births are from illegal mothers 1/3 of children in Arizona have immigrant parents.

"The United States shall guarantee to every State in this Union a Republican form of Government, and shall protect each of them against invasion." Article IV Section 4 of the U.S. Constitution.

The families need not be split up. Send the whole family back to Mexico. Then the kids can come back legally when they are 18.

Time to take away the anchorbrat amendment right away, secure the border so no more break in.

Let the illegals take their families with them the anchorkid shouldn't be considered a legal citizen born to a foreign national, period, problem solved.

Just because a pregnant woman steps over the border to give birth the kid should never be automatically given citizenship anymore than a pregnant American woman giving birth in another country, the child would not be given automatic citizenship of the country, I mean this is such a ludicrous argument it defies logic.

Pregnant American woman goes to Italy child is born there child is automatically given citizenship, American Mother is not, therefore she cannot stay in the country only the child can?? OH PLEASE!

Just deport them all!

Sorry to say but that THREAT needs to be put into action - deport the entire family. Have that as an INCENTIVE to come here LEGALLY. NOW, this is being abused. It's NOT RIGHT.

Congress is PURPOSELY misinterpreting the 14th Amendment.

"All persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and the State wherein they reside."

Babies born to illegal alien mothers within U.S. borders are called anchor babies because under the 1965 immigration Act, they act as an anchor that pulls the illegal alien mother and eventually a host of other relatives into permanent U.S. residency. (Jackpot babies is another term).

The 14th Amendment was ratified in 1868 to protect the rights of native-born Black Americans, whose rights were being denied as recently-freed slaves. In 1866, Senator Jacob Howard clearly spelled out the intent of the 14th Amendment by writing:
"Every person born within the limits of the United States, and subject to their jurisdiction, is by virtue of natural law and national law a citizen of the United States. This will not, of course, include persons born in the United States who are foreigners, aliens, who belong to the families of ambassadors or foreign ministers accredited to the Government of the United States, but will include every other class of persons. It settles the great question of citizenship and removes all doubt as to what persons are or are not citizens of the United States. This has long been a great desideratum in the jurisprudence and legislation of this country."


The original intent of the 14th Amendment was clearly not to facilitate illegal aliens defying U.S. law at taxpayer expense. Current estimates indicate there may be over 300,000 anchor babies born each year in the U.S., thus causing illegal alien mothers to add more to the U.S. population each year than immigration from all sources in an average year before 1965.

I have just one simple question in response to this manipulative statement: How many of these "higher anxiety" Mexican immigrants were legal immigrants"? I understand the answer to that one is zero

The wording of this statement is meant to set your mind at ease that it should no longer be a "problem", without presenting the muddled mess of what percentage of illegal invaders have been here longer than ten years, and thus are "entitled" to special privileges...

How many is that? Half of the 12 to 20 million?

For the record, there should be no such thing as anchor babies. Anyone who believes that was the original Constitutional intent is insane.

As long as we provide free services, the entire Third World will be trying to get in to get them

So don't split them up. Kick them all out. The whelp is a legal citizen? He/she can come back when they are 18. Otherwise, GTFO.
