This is an old article. It may have appeared here before. None the less this is an article that merits rereading at least once a year. At the root of much of the success that liberal pathology has had in the US is the smelly little secret that lots of supposedly educated people are abject physical cowards and proud of it. They are also agressive proponents of state tyranny. The combination makes sense. Those to whom having to defend themselves or their supposed loved ones with physical force is a profoundly frightening prospect naturally want to rely on a parent surrogate nanny state. A classical statement of this attitude is the phrase that government should be there to 'provide protection from gun violence' as one smarmy liberal academic put it. The final result of such egotistical gutlessness is a country where the state is powerful and the individual is a moral pgymy.

The current radiclib feminist attack on normal masculinity is just an extension of the cowardice culture. Strength is always fightening to a coward so as liberals love the ugly and debased in art and music they also love the morally debased in personal attributes. They mask this twisted socipathy with a smoke screen about the necessity for 'compassion' and 'tolerance' and are delighted to use the state to club anyone into line whose code of conduct or ethics hurts their tender little feelings.

I agree with this:

"The handgun is the only weapon that would give a lone female jogger a chance of prevailing against a gang of thugs intent on rape, a teacher a chance of protecting children at recess from a madman intent on massacring them, a family of tourists waiting at a mid-town subway station the means to protect themselves from a gang of teens armed with razors and knives."

I disagree. There are quite a number of other weapons, notably a submachinegun or automatic shotgun, that would work at least equally well in these circumstances.

Unfortunately, all other such weapons are a little impractical to haul around all the time. :)

Liberals simply don't want individuals to gain a sense of responsibility.

They abhor self-confidence and demand dependence in its place, or reverence at the very least. Cowardice, if possible.

This is an excellent article that has been posted many times. My only beef with it is that many of those supporting the positions he declaims are not really cowards, someone whose position is based on their unwillingness to face danger or pain.

They sincerely believe in the positions they have taken for philosophical or ideological reasons, often because they have never heard alternatives presented. Of course, their attackers uniformly view them as cowards.

The movement to ban all firearms has nothing to do with violence or crime. These are just the red herrings the grabbers use to dope the ignorant into supporting their agenda to neuter everyone. A disarmed society is easier to tax and control. That's the real goal.

"A NATION OF COWARDS"

Could be the title for an expose about the GOP Senate.
Wimps, weasels and wussies to boot. Like to boot them in their fat spineless arses...

It is an excelent article, and thank you for posting it. Also interesting are the number of so-called "conservatives" who have no problem lining up with Handgun Control and their ilk in attempts to abolish the 2nd amendment. RKBA is truly one of the most effective litmus tests in determining who is a statist and who is not.

We need to redouble our efforts to see to it that all of the present incursions upon the 2nd amendment are repealed. All too often, we are willing to settle for a mere holding action (like the failure to renew the AWB) and declare it a great victory. The good thing is that more states are passing concealed carry. Next we need ramp up efforts repeal the odious Gun Control Act of 1968, and ultimately the siimilarly totalitarian National Firearms Act of 1934. The left's latest strategy is to take actions to make guns unaffordable to anyone of average means. If every semi-auto weapon costs more than $1000, how many will be able to afford it?

You are correct that many gungrabbers want society disarmed so that it can be robbed at leisure by the state. However, I have known several educated fools who were absolutely terrified of firearms. Most men who I have seen that identify themselves with political liberalism strike me as being true physical cowards. All these little Guevara's want heavily armed goons a la the Gonzalez snatch to be available to execute their vile schemes. They personally are traumatized at yellow jacket getting in their prissy apartment or townhouse.

"For those who have no faith in an afterlife, a just God, or at least in some cosmic purpose higher than themselves, this life is all they have"

Aha, you have said the magic phrase. The duck comes down and gives you $50 (hey Groucho was on back in the 50's what do you expect retro rewards to be inflation adjusted.)

Yes, consumerist oriented secular societies are only about the individual diverting his or herself with gadgets and cheap psudo-experiences. The notion that there is any transcending or even immanent purpose in individual existence is subversive of both secular liberalism and consumerism. Loyalty to church, culture, or even family is nothing compared to achieving the all elusive 'self esteem'.
Small wonder that both in the US and even more in Europe the inheritors of the mightiest cultural tradition ever forged are busy depopulating their way to the death of the West.

Nothing produces more outrage among either consumerists or secular liberals than to confront them with the consequences of their collective cowardice and self indulgence. That is part of why the the reaction to the anti-abortion movement is so hysterically virulent. It confronts these people with what they will do to gain materiel torpor.

Defending yourself is not an easy proposition. It takes guts to do that.

In grade school a kid was picking on me, and my dad told me to hit him in the nose as hard as I could. Well, that guy actually became a friend of mine after he got the sock in the nose and bled all over the playground.

I tell my kids the same thing. You have the right to defend yourself, and you should. Don't worry about the pc school rule that says you should never hit back. Just do it. You can do whatever you are big enough to do.

Some little boy hit by daughter in the mouth. She told me that really hurt. Then she punched him in the stomach. He cried, she didn't.

She's a tough little gal. I'm proud of her. That boy didn't bother her any more after that either. The school gave her detention. She felt that was unfair and I agreed with her since he hit her first. I think the boy got detention too, and frankly if he'd have been my son I'd have whipped his butt for picking on a little girl half his size.

Power And Responsibility Is your life worth protecting? If so, whose responsibility is it to protect it?

My life is my responsibility, and mine to protect. I am still strong enough to do that.

That said, it is a hallmark of civilization that the strong protect the weak.

If we ever descend into savagery, dog-eat-dog, then I have lived too long and the nation that I gave my youth in service to is as dead as the dodo.
