Well at one point in recent history we came close to having a dictator under FDR. I can go along with it under the idea that a break of one term be given after the second elected term in the senate and no more than four terms in the house with a break of two terms. If after the break in office they can be reelected fine but still maintain the same cycle. I think that would be a healthy solution to bad career politicians. It's very obvious the founders had no intentions of being career politicians they did their service and moved on.
On the DEM side Kennedy should have retired 24 years ago. He's been in office 44 years as a senator. That's ridiculous. As ridiculous as Strom Thurmond's terms were. No person can stay in DC that long and still have a sense of the realities back home. It can't be done.
Maybe 2 - six year terms for Senators and 3 - four year terms for Representatives.
Right now it seems like the first thing a politician does after being elected is establish a re-election committee and start fundraising.
Serving the people ends up being secondary.
