Dean Misstates Party's Position on Gays

WASHINGTON - Democratic chairman Howard Dean mischaracterized his party's platform on gay rights in an interview courting evangelicals, then set the record straight Thursday when an advocacy group called him on it.

Dean told Christian Broadcasting Network News that the 2004 Democratic platform declares "marriage is between a man and a woman" — just one of the points he made in reaching out to religious conservatives who are largely hostile to the party.

But the platform does not define marriage that way, and his remarks prompted the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force to return a $5,000 donation from the Democratic National Committee.

Dean later acknowledged his misstatement, but the group sent back the money anyway. "We need for Governor Dean to demonstrate real leadership on our issues," executive director Matt Foreman said in an interview, "not to equivocate depending on the audience."

Equivocating must be "democrat" for lying. Still working on that democrat - English translation dictionary.

the dems are seriously gunning for a victory in 06. they even believe now that they can get conservative Christians to vote for them if they just say they're against gay marriage.

the real story in my mind is that had the President's people, together with a VERY conniving media, not put us in this position, Dean wouldn't be trying to get a majority, but to keep from losing even more seats.

i guess im using this post to express my frustrations with Pres. Bush for many, many issues. it's like his message has been off ever since the re-election. i know he and his staff are frustrated over the slow process in iraq, but they have completely cratered in the face of the relentless media attack(s).

it's no wonder his poll ratings are so low given the complete lack of a fearless, outspoken proponent in the press office. hopefully tony snow will be able to turn it around. and come on, already, do something about illegal immigration! don't just do nothing! don't just say nothing!

and the Republicans in the house and senate are worthless pieces of dung with no backbone and no leadership. the house republicans are sitting on a house of cards, and the senate is being "led" by a completely limp-wristed plastic politician who wants only to run for president but not to address some very real and painful issues. what happened to his hard line on immigration last month?

maybe the problem is not just the politicians in this country, but the people who answer their stupid polling questions on the phone. this country is filled with uninformed dumbasses who can't find louisiana or missippi on a map but are glad to tell you their views on the way hurricane katrina was mishandled by Pres. Bush. these pathetic politicians in washington cater to the dumbest asses on the planet.

yes, of course, im still voting republican. what else am i going to do?
