Gibson inspired by 'fear-mongering' Bush (Mel Gibson)

Film star and director Mel Gibson has launched a scathing attack on US President George W Bush, comparing his leadership to the barbaric rulers of the Mayan civilisation in his new film Apocalypto.

The epic, due for release later this year, captures the decline of the Maya kingdom and the slaughter of thousands of inhabitants as human sacrifices in a bid to save the nation from collapsing.

Gibson reveals he used present day American politics as an inspiration, claiming the government callously plays on the nation's insecurities to maintain power.

He tells British film magazine Hotdog, "The fear-mongering we depict in the film reminds me of President Bush and his guys".

I can't entirely disagree with Mel on this one, even though I don't know what his agenda is.

The WOT has been center stage the star of the show, even though we still don't have Ben Laden, as our borders are open by government invitation, diasterous international agreements intered into, and the man behind the curtain slips by several personal agendas.

If the US Government really wanted to ferret out jihadists, it'd deport all Muslims to their country of origin.

Including American citizens? The tactics you describe are a far more egregious infringement on the rights of U.S. citizens then anything previously done.

I have my problems with Bush, but Gibson is beginning to look like just another Hollyweird looney with a religious streak.

Disspointed to hear that - but at second glance it doesnt seem to be the slap that some will portray it as. The analogy seems to be in reverse.

The indigenous Mayans were conquered by the more advanced Spanish. A Mayan leader in the film analogous to the President would be someone rightly trying to defend the Mayans from the Spanish.

Todays situation is the opposite - the poorer third world countries are pushing back and into wealthier Europe and the United States.

If he wants to comment on the President's leadership style - I dont agree but much better that Gibson does it in a subtle way via a historical tale, than a ridiculously blatant character assasination propaganda of Michael Moore.

I wonder if he wasn't talking about Reid, Pelosi, Kerry, AlGore, Kennedy, Dean, etc. etc. etc. etc.

Good old Mel made his quarter billion dollars off our backs with the "Passion" Now he can afford to piss us off, and get back into the good graces of Leftist Hollyweird

That was not the implication at all. If you look closely, the table used by the Roman while Jesus is being lashed looks like the table Jesus made.

Geez! So you differ with him on one issue, and you're not going to his movie over that? Damn. Conservative do eat our own, don't we?

I'm going to have to see this from more than one source. This is from the British magazine "Hot Dog" with a stock photo of him from an awards ceremony. Not that reporters would make stuff up or distort an interview, but this is pretty diametrically opposed to everything I've ever read from Gibson.

Hey People, WAKE UP!! Mel Gibson is but an actor the last time I looked. Why in the hell any of you put strong beliefs in what he says or believes in, is stupid. I'm a carpenter, do you care what I think? I doubt it.

Well, if it wasn't the implication, then:

1) Many many reviewers (some sympathetic to the movie) were misled just like me; and
2) The scene (along with most of the scenes with Mary the Mother of Jesus) was nonetheless stupid and not believable.

Mel Gibson was NEVER a supporter of Present Bush.

Mr. Gibson is against abortion so many just assumed he supported President Bush.

9/11 was a theatrical show meant to demonstrate power and capability, not to terrorize.

This is one of the most foolish things I've read in a while. And manifestly you aren't embarrassed. But you should be.

Ugh, I forgot about the movie about the aliens coming to the cornfields. (What was it called?) Ugh, that was a terrible movie, IMHO.

"I'm a carpenter, do you care what I think? I doubt it."

Actually I'd probably put more stock in what you have to say, than an out of touch Hollywood actor, no matter how good or conservative some of his films have been.
