Tony Snow Influence: Bush to Put National Guard on Border?
The National Ledger ^ | 05-12-06 | CK Rairden

The latest job-approval rating for President George W. Bush shows he has fallen into the 20's according to a Harris Interactive poll and now sits with a 29% approval rating.

The answer to the sinking numbers appears to be - call a prime time Monday press conference and address the immigration debate.

"This is crunch time," Tony Snow, the new White House press secretary said Friday at his first off-camera, or informal, briefing.

Tony really does have his work cut out for him. But the only way to go is up if this poll from WSJ is accurate. Gotta stay optimistic, like Rush says.

If the Bush admin does indeed ever get serious about border security it won't be due to the influence of Tony Snow, but due to the consistent pressure applied by the GOP base.

IF the NG is set to patrolling the border, I will expect to see actual effective interdiction of illegal invaders.

They better not use the NG to interfere with the MinuteMen.

Also LOL. I'm sure many presidents have made policy based on the influence of their press secretaries who have been on the job for less than a week.

i read earlier about the NG being posted at the borders, i also read earlier that bush's press briefing on monday will be to push the amnesty bill again. my guess is that he'll do this to get the amnesty bill passed, then pull the NG from the borders. in other words, they'll be there to appease the CITIZENS until his amnesty bs is passed. we need to BE SURE he understands that we're NOT stupid & believing he's actually changed his mind. nows the time to step up the phone calls & letters people.

--Approval ratings for Congress overall also sank, and now stand at 18%.

--Roughly one-quarter of U.S. adults say “things in the country are going in the right direction,” while 69% say “things have pretty seriously gotten off on the wrong track.”

If this divides 50/50 like the last two presidential elections that makes a whopping 9% of Republican voters and 9% of Democrat voters that are happy with Congress.

In their next session they might consider outlawing the sale of tar and feathers within a 100 mile radius of the District of Columbia. /sarcasm

Putting the Guard on the border is nice, but it is not sufficient.

The Guard can be removed.

The BorderBots have been consistently demanding a FENCE, from sea to sea. Not "enhanced enforcement" (whatever that means, it can be followed by "reduced enforcement", and that's not good enough); not "more border patrols".
These are all band-aids whose purpose is to look like you're doing something without actually taking the decisive, fatal and PERMANENT step of putting up a barrier on that border.

Republicans appear to STILL be resisting doing what is demanded of them. The National Guard on the border now is nice. But will they be there in 2 years? In 5? In 30 years? Will this be PERMANENT? No, it won't be. Let's not lie to ourselves. It's a stopgap to try and make the issue go away.

I don't think BorderBots are going to buy it. I think they will think it's bait and switch. Maybe I'm wrong on that score, but I think that the Republicans will be destroyed in November if they do not vote for, fund, and start construction on a SECURITY FENCE. Anything less than that is just not going to cut it.

Lets examine how this works under a Bush administration. GW activates 4,000 NG troops in California, Arizona, New Mexico and Texas. These are the guys who were doing rotations to Iraq...but if he intends to cut back drastically spring of next year...then theres no problem. But when you spread these guys along the 1,254 miles...and figure that they already have second-rate equipment handed to them from the regular army...that they won't have any aerial surveillance (USAF and Army aren't going to hand over aerial platforms to the NG is my guess)...and they have to live in second rate bunk camps that are twice as bad as the camps in Iraq...you can already smell success with this operation. Certainly they will be complaining when they are given 120 day deployments and it will eventually drop to 30 day deployments at the most...and probably 2,000 troops actually deployed.

This is a joke. The pentagon will ensure that...and the Minutemen will tell you that within two weeks after the boys start their patrols. Its an election year scheme...and built to be dissolved by Xmas...my bet.
