President's Immigration speech - Live thread

Edited on 05/15/2006 4:38:26 PM PDT by Jim Robinson. [history]

I searched but did not see a thread already open for tonights speech. I think this is the most important speech the President will probably make for the remainder of his term.

Mod Note:
This could turn into a whack-a-troll thread. All immigration trolls that would like to participate should post here. It'll be interesting to see if we mods can whack the trolls faster than they can sign up new accounts.
Jim

That is very much disputed. Demographer Campbell Gibson calculated that 49% of the 1990 population could be attributed to the original settlers. They had extremely high reproduction rates at first. Think about it--large parts of the US like the South still have a clear connection to the settlers. On top of that, the foreign born have rarely had more than 10% of the population, and they have only come in spurts because there have been substantial periods of immigration restriction like 1924 to the 1960's.

Here is the cite: Gibson, Campbell. The contribution of immigration to the growth and ethnic diversity of the American population. Proceedings of the American Philosophical Society, Vol. 136, No. 2, Jun 1992. 157-75 pp. Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. In Eng.

""And the vast majority of Mexican Americans in this country qualify the same way. Many of the families were here before the Mayflower even launched.""

So you are arguing that the "vast majority" of "Mexican Americans" in this nation have had ancestry in this nation since before the launch of the Mayflower? Is that what you are asserting?

"for a country under THE RULE OF LAW."

Rule of Law? Have you been following the Duke LaCrosse case lately? We don't have much rule of law left in this country either. Check out Tom Delay's indictment for proof, or Scooter Libby's.

That won't work. Nothing works. Just give up. It has no chance. It's too expensive. Walls don't work. You want the Berlin Wall? Next you'll want mines. You want to kill people? It won't stop tunnels. They come in by planes. Trucks. They'll use trucks. It violates international law. Give me a minute I'll have some more excuses.

Nothing will keep me from it. Those supporting this I vote out. I will look for a conservative canidate withing the Independent s if the GOP can not provide such.

I'm with you...I'll vote for a conservative, even if I have to write one in...

"This is the end, beautiful friend
This is the end, my only friend
The end of our elaborate plans
The end of everything that stands
The end"

George Bush has had the opportunity to be one of the great presidents and he has squandered it. And the loss is ours, we and our children and our children's children will pay the price. We are rapidly approaching the point of no return.

I can live with this.

Either way, you have no choice...now. If the Rats take charge in one house or the White House this year or two years from now, it will only get worse. If instead of throwing out the baby with the bathwater, we boot a few more RINO's and strengthen our hand, we may see some improvement.

BTW, I'm not a Bushbot and am very much for a 100% PHYSICAL border. I don't see it happening soon and carping about it isn't going to change anything. I'm lucky though; I have a very conservative representative who has introduced legislation to physically secure the border and catch and detain/boot illegals then work on the other issues. Some of this might sound familar as of this evening.

A review of H.R. 4312 (re-introduced by Rep. Pearce on 3/30 as H.R. 5067):

As the only member of the Homeland Security Committee who represents a congressional district on the Mexican border, Rep. Pearce and his staff played a leading role in the development of H.R. 4312, which redesigned the federal government’s approach to border security.

Language Congressman Pearce successfully urged the Committee to incorporate in the original text of H.R. 4312
:

Amendments offered by Congressman Pearce and passed by the Committee

Um, is it not implied with the existance of this worker ID card that employers will be required by federal law to show that those they employed presented this card before being given employment? That sure is the impression I got. So, if non-citizens have to have that card to get employment, is that not incentive for immigrants to respect the process and get that card, otherwise it will be much harder to work? That's the whole point of the card. It's implied in the suggestion of that card's creation that it would be required by federal law for employers to check for it before giving employment, and then taxes will be taken finally. Most employers won't risk the tens of thousands in fines by using illegals who don't have that card. That's the whole point.

He also needs Conservatives in the GOP. Nothing is going to get passed. Tancredo and King just laid down a line in the sand ... no amnesty. Like the Miers debacle ... we Conservatives will win in the end. The cards 'Rats in the Senate hold are nothing. Bush is now on record as an obstructionist. The border problems will get worse. Blame it on the 'Rats.

Self-deportation has been the approach that has been overwhelmingly advocated here on FR.

self deportation is a pipe dream. I was watching a piece on Telemundo the other day where they were interviewing day laborer illegals, and one of them mentioned "one thing I cannot do is return home empty-handed". They will stay and find other ways of supporting themselves (crime, the dole, etc.)

we already live in a country where you can't get a new refinery built, you can't get new electrical production plants built, it takes years to get environmental clearance to build new highways - yet people come on here and say "100 million new people, no problem".

am I dreaming?

Good job President Bush.

I thought it was a strong speech.

It reflected the values and views consistently expressed by this president while still reaching out to those who want strict border enforcement.

The speech was much better than Dick Durbin's response.

I find it interesting that though Bush is often criticized as a poor speaker I have never heard a response speech to the president that was of higher quality.
