He is trying to be on all sides of the issue by offering soundbites for everyone. Basically he's pulling a Clinton. Nothing much we can do about it.

To: Gorobei; Cowboy Bob
If it walks like amnesty, talks like amnesty, then by goodness it IS amnesty.Well, it is not a 'blanket' amnesty. . .what IS the alternative. . .send eleven million of the home this week? Or just start, one by one. . .? There are incentives here for these people to do the 'right thing'; and reasons to send them home; it is a start.
IT is a terrible situation; but reason has to come to bear here somewhere. IMHO. .
Meantime, stop the Liberalizing of Education. . .so these people can learn our history. . .and appreciate it. Same goes for our children as well.

Time for impeachment talks. Time for Boxcars to the Borders!!!Anyone else wants a ticket outta here, that's how.

Good speech. I'm convinced that comprehensive immigration reform is needed. If we can find a middle ground between amnesty and deportation I'm for it. Thank you in advance GW for securing our border.
It's a sad day really for us older Americans that we have to close the border to our long time friends but it needed to be done. Great work.

I don't know about that. Lou Dobbs liked the speech. You had that line ready no matter what the outcome
To: Leisler
We will continue to work cooperatively to improve security on both sides of the border ... to confront common problems like drug trafficking and crime ... and to reduce illegal immigration.Still intends to keep the gates open.

Amazing! I thought I was hallucinating for a few minutes. It seems as though Bush finally found a way to use the spine hes had on foreign policy the past six year, on domestic policy with the border. Short of not building a wall, hes pledged to do all the things I recall real conservatives have said needed to be done to secure the border! National Guard on the border, more Border Patrol, more surveillance, cameras, guaranteed deportation and no more stupid mega-retarded "catch and release" program, and even though Im not a fan of the whole worker program, that ID would be great if they make it hard to illegally duplicate, and illegals couldnt get work and employers would be stupid to risk the consequence of hiring people without that card. I cant wait to hear Limbaugh and Hannity on the radio tomorrow!
The democrats will be fools to oppose all this. ALL the polls, even the liberal ones taken about the border issue show that 70% to 80% or more of American CITIZENS want the border secured and illegals deported. Thats about 99% of conservatives and a significant number of the independents and the few rational democrats. If the democrats fight this, they will lose big for sure in November, as it will be so easy to paint them as anti-border security. This is awesome. Just my opinion, but I bet the Border Patrol story about them leaking Minuteman and other border watch group location and numbers to the Mexican Consulate is what made Bush have to get serious about this. Hes been in trouble about the border for a long time, but I think that might have pushed it over the edge.
Ill bet over the next few weeks, his "approval" rating numbers go up 20 to 30%. The his conservative base, like me, is why its been so far down. Id give him a favorable now. THAT is the President I voted for two times. The only thing that would make it even better the next few months would be Bin-Laden being found dead in Afghanistan, and Justice Stevens or Ginsburg retiring so the Democrats can froth at the mouth demanding a flaming liberal to take their place. A huge majority of the American people want what Bush put forward tonight. The Democrats took a big hit tonight with this speech.

Step one is secure the borders. The rest, we can talk about after you secure the borders. Don't ask me to trust you on immigration reform if you can't even secure the borders.
If the borders are sealed, the problem becomes very solvable.
Fail to secure the borders, and nothing we do will work.

No surprises here:
"Mexico is our neighbor and our friend."
Yeah, that must be why they flood us with the dregs of their society and illegal drugs, and break our laws with impunity. Our amigos . . .
Oh, and the National Guard won't be actually doing anything along the border, just standing around with thumbs up their . . . how insulted must they feel?
But it's not amnesty, it's not amnesty, it's not amnesty . . .
Strange, isn't it? We will be able to supervise millions of our friends, Mexican lawbreakers: locate them, register them, take their digital fingerprints, supervise them in the payment of fines, and in leaving and returning--but it's unrealistic to think we could simply find them and deport them.
"I, George Walker Bush, do hereby swear that I will uphold and defend the Constitution of . . . "
Mexico!

Time for Boxcars to the Borders!!!Why is it wrong to want illegals hauled to the border and deported? I do believe that if you read the threads, about 90% of the people feel this way.

I just finished watching Bush's speech. I have to say that I was not disappointed. He said about what I thought he would say which was basically nothing. Basically, the NG troops will make dough-nut runs for the border patrol guys and that's about it. However, I watched Newt Gingrich on Tim Russert's Meet The Press yesterday and I like his ideas on the illegal immigrant issue. Also, when asked by Russert about running for prez, newt didn't "completely" rule out the notion. I know the guy has some baggage problems but I kinda think he might have possibilities...
