But there's no "occupation" as the meaning is intended. And academic readers who would require such a stretch in compromise speech are with the terrorists.

He's exactly right. They hate Israel more than they love Palestinians.
What can they cite as evidence that they have done anything to help Palestinians?
If they really want to show support for the Palestinians, that way is to go to their institutions and teach. Why don't they? Could it be that they are fearful of the reactionary government that has eyes on forming a Palestinian theocracy, that foments inter-Palestinian violence, that might harm them?
Possibly, but no doubt they blame Israel for that, too.
