Eight workers at the city's Department of Water and Power have been arrested because they were unauthorized to work in the United States, the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement said.
The agency arrested five people Tuesday and had previously arrested three others as part of a yearlong review of the utility's employment records by the agency and the utility itself.
The workers held both blue collar and management jobs, according to an ICE statement. All had been with the company for at least three years and one made more than $100,000 a year.
The joint investigation was part of a larger effort by ICE to root out unauthorized workers with access to critical infrastructure like nuclear plants and water supplies, though the agency emphasized that none of the arrested had known terrorist ties.
All of the arrested workers - nationals of Ethiopia, Nigeria, El Salvador and Mexico whose names were not released - had come to the United States legally. Some, however, had visas that did not authorize them to work and two were legal residents with criminal convictions that made them eligible for deportation, the statement said.
The DWP was not accused of knowingly hiring illegal workers, and the agency participated fully in the investigation that examined the records of over 7000 employees, ICE said.
"In many cases, companies such as DWP seek to hire legal workers, only to have their efforts undermined by employees who present counterfeit documents or knowingly violate the conditions of their admission," said Julie L. Myers, Homeland Security's assistant secretary for the immigration and customs agency.
"When a person uses fraud or false documents to obtain a job, they mask not only their true identities, but also their motives and in some cases, their criminal history."

$100,000 a year? No wonder they want to come here. Still, it seems unlikely you couldn't find an American or two to work for $100,000 a year.
(Denny Crane: "Every one should carry a gun strapped to their waist. We need more - not less guns.")
Jus' a doin' the jobs no American wants to do, doncha know, Senor.
I saw this on the news last night - it seems like it was a government official who said "they provided a social security card and a drivers license what more could the company have done?"
They said they were being deported - no sob stories about the families left behind though.
8 down 39,000,991 to go....or something like that
..now how does that go? Doing jobs Americans won't do
Doogle
A year-long investigation?
We're not going to get much
done at that pace!
company? this is the City of Los Angeles! I am sure the Mayor doesnt see anything wrong with it.
Plus, 100k is the tip of the ice berg. They get full pensions, zero deductible health care, etc.
To ALL
We have lost the Senate.
Write or call your Representative in the House!
They must hold, or life as we know it in the US will change forever.
Quit bitching and start calling or writing.
We MAY be able to stop this.
I bet you could get 2 Americans to fill that 100k a yr job at 50k apiece.
LOL - I'm pretty sure you could.
¿Los Ángeles no es una ciudad del santuario?
"Eight workers at the city's Department of Water and Power"
Of course, there was never any sort of terrorist risk.
No chance that Los Angeles would be deprived of the water that makes
it's existence possible.
Or the power for the computers that run the commercial enterprise of
the place.

Below is the link to a summary on the Islamic group that got shut down
in my parent's town.
My parents got to see the FBI posse raid the home of the leader of the group
(no mention of the group in the local media since...liberal
university town and alma mater of Walter Cronkite, dontchaknow?)
What was the day-job of the leader of the group?
Worked in the water resouces management department of the county.

My letter to the President, faxed today.
President George W. Bush FAX: 202-456-2461
Regarding: Illegal Immigration 5/17/2006
Dear Mr. President;
I worked on both of your campaigns and chaired the communications committee of my county campaign in 2004. I am a solid conservative and have supported you through times when I was less than pleased with your policies because I know you are a good man.
I have to confess, I am at a point of utter disillusionment with your latest move to provide Immigration Reform. I do not believe it is appropriate to reform immigration by opening our borders to more people who refuse to speak our language or accept our culture. I do not believe it serves the interest of our nation to create more division through bilingualism and multiculturalism.
Rather than reform our immigration laws, how about ENFORCING the existing ones.
I find your argument of seeking a rational middle ground insincere.
Very few people, if any, actually believe we should round up 12 million people and force them back over the border. To suggest such is absurd!
Instead, we should immediately;
1) Enforce the border and prevent further incursions
2) Enforce the law and stop allowing employers to hire illegals
3) Enforce immigration laws on felons and criminals by deportation
4) Immediately stop providing education, health and welfare benefits to illegals
5) Immediately declare all children born of illegal immigrants non-citizens. The 14th amendment does not mandate granting citizenship to anyone born in the states through illegal means. If it is interpreted this way, we should change it.
6) Influence the Mexican Government to clean up its corruption so these people have an opportunity *within their own country* to be successful.
7) When all is said and done above, then we can have a guest worker program that punishes those who cheat and rewards those who follow the rules. But those who have already broken the rules should be given demerits in obtaining a guest worker status and those who return to Mexico and follow the rules should be given preference.
I think this is a common sense proposal. I have to believe there are ulterior motives for even suggesting we should bring in more Mexicans to the USA and especially those who refuse to accept our language or culture.
Why bother? Bush, Frist and the Democrats will grant them amnesty, insource 10's of millions more above that, all to help their corporate benefactors.
Lower and Middle class American lifestyles are an excess cost and "over". Either get rich or get a government sinecure now. America is being salvaged for parts.
