Or another fungal infection yet to be identified. The disease almost sound like a mycellium is spreading through the patient's body. The pimples could be the fruiting body, the threads could be the mycellium.

Had to look it up:

mycelium

. The vegetative part of a fungus, consisting of a mass of branching, threadlike hyphae.
. A similar mass of fibers formed by certain bacteria.
