Elizabeth Dole Chair, NRSC Hello folks, The Senate has been debating various aspects of immigration this week to strengthen border security and reform our nation's immigration policy. I thought I would take this opportunity to let you know what's really been going on, and where Republicans and Democrats stand on these critical issues. When given the opportunity to vote for true border security--including 370 miles of triple-layered fencing and 500 miles of vehicle barriers along our border with Mexico--15 Democrats voted against the proposal. But, ALL 55 Republicans voted for it. Two vulnerable Democrats who voted against this proposal--Senators Maria Cantwell (D-WA) and Bob Menendez (D-NJ)--are facing challenges from Republicans with strong stances on immigration: Mike McGavick in Washington and Tom Kean, Jr. in New Jersey. I don't think the voters in those states will be happy to learn that their representatives in Congress have put our security and economy at risk by refusing to support border security measures. When given an opportunity to make English the national language, many Democrats also balked--including Senator Maria Cantwell (D-WA), Senator Bob Menendez (D-NJ), and Senator Debbie Stabenow (D-MI), who we also feel is very vulnerable. The amendment that would do so, sponsored by Senator Inhofe (R-Oklahoma), which passed 63-34, will not only honor our traditions and history, but also help to ensure that future generations of Americans are united by a single, common language. Unfortunately, not everyone in the Senate--including the Democrat Leader, Senator Harry Reid (D-NV)--saw it that way. In fact, Senator Reid demostrated Beltway Democrats' extreme position on the immigration issue when he declared: "I really believe this amendment is racist." I was amazed that the leader of the Senate Democrats would actually say such a thing. Harry Reid owes the American people an apology for such an outrageous statement. I have been disappointed by the votes, rhetoric, and behavior of many Democrats during this week's debate. Sometimes it just seems like their priorities are different from most Americans'. The 66 Senators Who Voted for Amnesty
This week, the Senate voted on many amendments, but the most important vote was the Vitter Amendment, which attempted to removed the amnesty/legalization provisions of the bill. Sixty six Senators went this dangerous and radical route to give citizenship to close to 10 million illegal immigrants.

Amnesty or legalization:

* harms the unskilled workers and people at the bottom in america TODAY
* adds burdens to taxpayers who will have to pay $50 billion or more a year in added net costs to the Government
* makes addressing illegal immigration harder, not easier, and burdens future Americans who will suffer from more floods of illegal immigrants
* is unfair to the legal immigrants who waited on line, sometimes 20 years, only to see that the illegal immigrants have a cheaper, faster, easier path to citizenship than they have.

AMNESTY IS CRUELTY TO LEGAL IMMIGRANTS AND TO AMERICA'S WORKING POOR. Senate debate reports show that the pro-amnesty side is reduced to strawman arguments to make their case - "He [Mccain] argued that the status quo was not acceptable and yet neither was mass deportation. Or, he said, the alternative was to make it clear illegal aliens would have to pay a severe penalty to stay." So, $2000 is a 'severe penalty', and the only other choice to a path to citizenship and giving them social security benefits based on phony SS numbers is ... mass deportation. Strawman scare tactics. The Senate "No Illegal Left Behind" bill is giving us.

Dear Mr. Mehlman,
As it appears some Republican senators either lack or are unfamiliar with dictionaries, I will be starting my own fund to supply these senators, sadly that means no further funds for Republicans unless I am assured they have and can use a dictionary.
I have had one for years and found it handly when Clinton was Pres and he had trouble defining "is". I am certainly glad I kept it so that I can offer you and the Republicans the definition of AMNESTY. Please share it with John McCain and the others who seem to think the Senate proposal on illegal aliens is NOT amnesty.

Thanks for posting the names. These rogue senators should be always remembered and every legal action taken to remove them from office. They pose a danger to this country.

There is not one single good reason to give amnesty to illegal aliens (all of whom have demonstrated that they are eager to break our laws if it benefits them).

It is shocking that the majority in our senators are willing to destroy this country.

The president has supported building a wall for over a year now, so if you have problems with the fact that a wall hasn't been built, take it up with Congress. He supported Sensenbrenner's suggestion to build a 700 mile wall, but Congress rejected it. Bush even signed legislation which funded the wall.

As an aside, although there are complaints that under this administration, employer fines have decreased for hiring illegal immigration, what seems to have gone unnoticed by the border hysterics is that it's because what was once a fine is now a CRIME.

And it is within the power of each Governor to call up the National Guard to defend the borders. But some Governors are opposed to that idea too.

And for those who are saying the war in Iraq is making it impossible for our National Guard to protect the country here, there are over 300,000 National Guardsmen and only 30,000 are in Iraq or Afghanistan.

Regarding this statement:

If you substitute Republicans for Democrats then yes, you are right. We expect Democrats to act like complete morons, but not Republicans. I would suggest getting some of your esteemed colleagues in line with what American citizens want.
