Important Immigration Update from Senator Elizabeth Dole

Hello folks,

The Senate has been debating various aspects of immigration this week to strengthen border security and reform our nation's immigration policy. I thought I would take this opportunity to let you know what's really been going on, and where Republicans and Democrats stand on these critical issues.

When given the opportunity to vote for true border security--including 370 miles of triple-layered fencing and 500 miles of vehicle barriers along our border with Mexico--15 Democrats voted against the proposal. But, ALL 55 Republicans voted for it. Two vulnerable Democrats who voted against this proposal--Senators Maria Cantwell (D-WA) and Bob Menendez (D-NJ)--are facing challenges from Republicans with strong stances on immigration: Mike McGavick in Washington and Tom Kean, Jr. in New Jersey. I don't think the voters in those states will be happy to learn that their representatives in Congress have put our security and economy at risk by refusing to support border security measures.

When given an opportunity to make English the national language, many Democrats also balked--including Senator Maria Cantwell (D-WA), Senator Bob Menendez (D-NJ), and Senator Debbie Stabenow (D-MI), who we also feel is very vulnerable. The amendment that would do so, sponsored by Senator Inhofe (R-Oklahoma), which passed 63-34, will not only honor our traditions and history, but also help to ensure that future generations of Americans are united by a single, common language.

Unfortunately, not everyone in the Senate--including the Democrat Leader, Senator Harry Reid (D-NV)--saw it that way. In fact, Senator Reid demostrated Beltway Democrats' extreme position on the immigration issue when he declared: "I really believe this amendment is racist." I was amazed that the leader of the Senate Democrats would actually say such a thing. Harry Reid owes the American people an apology for such an outrageous statement.

I have been disappointed by the votes, rhetoric, and behavior of many Democrats during this week's debate. Sometimes it just seems like their priorities are different from most Americans'.

As we continue to debate immigration reform and how to make sure that our borders are secure, I'll be sure to keep you posted on our progress. Thanks very much for your support.

According to Sessions a lot of the GOP Senators know their bill is a disaster but are counting on the House to gut it. Why take that chance, they should act responsibly and come up with a worthy bill on their own.

That type of gutless 'legislating' makes me want to puke. They are so heavily calculating everything they completely lose sight of what is right and wrong. This is a no-brainer for real Americans. We SECURE THE BORDER FIRST. Whatever they do after that will be unpleasant but tolerable. But without real border security, nothing they do is worth a damn.

All they're doing is making themselves look either like traitors and sellouts or cowards fearful the democrats will roll over them with filibusters and name calling. We'll have to leave it to the House for responsible leadership. Thanks for nothing Frist.

Frist hasn't got a chance in 2008. People complain about Lott but if he were majority leader there would be no Ted Kennedy scamnesty bill on the floor right now.

We know where Senate Republicans stand on amnesty Liddy, but let's look at those you name for consideration?

If I'm not mistaken, kean came out against the abomination in the Senate (probably because his challenger came out strong against) and McGavick's platform is that GWP is DOA until the border is first secured. Maybe you can explain why their platforms are more responsible than the Senate you represent? I have to believe if the Senate was so damn popular right now on this issue that two prospective Senators in blue states, at least in mine (WA) dealing heavily with illegal immigration and growing Hispanic community, would be racing to join the Senate's full blown open borders crowd.

This tells me an awaful lot. This tell me as angry as your red state folks are, those of us in traditionally blue states are equally in uproar, including DEMOCRATS, putting Fred's ridiculous column on exhibition for who can write the most ridiculous column of the month.

As it appears some Republican senators either lack or are unfamiliar with dictionaries, I will be starting my own fund to supply these senators, sadly that means no further funds for Republicans unless I am assured they have and can use a dictionary. I have had one for years and found it handly when Clinton was Pres and he had trouble defining "is". I am certainly glad I kept it so that I can offer you and the Republicans the definition of AMNESTY. Please share it with John McCain and the others who seem to think the Senate proposal on illegal aliens is NOT amnesty.
