GLSEN, the Gay, Lesbian & Straight Education Network of Wisconsin, announced a name change at its annual honors dinner at Monona Terrace.
From now on, it will be known as the Gay-Straight Alliance for Safe Schools, Executive Director Cindy Crane announced Saturday.
Crane explained the name change accompanied an "amicable" break from the national organization of GLSEN, she said in an interview Monday. The Madison-based chapter desired more independence than that offered by the national organization, which wanted to have more control over national campaigns.
"We are a very independent chapter," Crane said. "We look forward to having a partnership in the future. We just aren't sure of what that partnership will be just yet."
Awards: The 10th annual recognition dinner and silent auction was called a "Celebration of Leadership" and honored six high school seniors and one high school principal who showed acceptance and respect for sexual minorities.
"The highlight of our dinner was to honor the courage and activism of the youth and adults in the community," Crane said.
Four seniors received $500 scholarships. They were Emma Zeldin and Brianna Buhr of Madison's Malcolm Shabazz High School, David Seitz of Wauwatosa East High School and Elise Ganser of Sauk Prairie High School.
Seniors Kat Koslov of Middleton High School and Jaime Schoenmann of Malcolm Shabazz High School were honored with community activist awards. Retiring Middleton Principal Tom Vandervest received the educator award.
U.S. Rep. Tammy Baldwin, D-Madison, and Julie Underwood, dean of the UW-Madison School of Education, were the guest speakers.
