ATLANTA - Former president Carter, a Democrat and frequent critic of President Bush, sees eye-to-eye with him on immigration.
Carter on Wednesday called the Republican president's commitment to immigration reform "quite admirable," saying he agrees with Bush's support of a system that would eventually grant citizenship to some illegals.
The Senate is set to vote as early as Thursday on a bill that calls for tougher border security as well as an eventual chance at citizenship for millions of men and women in the country illegally.
The law should secure the nation's borders while "at the same time treating those who are here with respect and giving them some hope for the future," Carter said.
The Senate plan, which closely mirrors Bush's own proposal, faces an uncertain fate in the House, where representatives have passed legislation that would expose all illegal immigrants to felony charges.
Carter spoke at the close of a three-day forum of international human rights workers at The Carter Center in Atlanta. Human rights activists from 22 countries attended the forum.

Oh S*%T! It is even worse than I thought.
I'm on the President's side on this issue, but I disagree with Carter. It isn't about treating the illegals with respect. It is about trying to co-opt as large a portion of them as possible so we can get past the hump. It is also about security. Turning 10-20 million illegals into felons would be very bad for our security, and probably chase a lot of hispanics into the open arms of socialist revolutionaries, and islamic jihadists.

I wish it was the kiss of death, but the Republicans seem to be caving on this one, too. I can't believe we'd grant citizenship to people who we know have broken the law.
While border security is one step, the real solution is hefty fines on companies that hire illegals. This also means that the cost of verifying credentials must also fall on companies. While my lettuce may bump up in price a few cents, that's much cheaper than the free ride I'm giving them now through my tax subsidies of them and their families. Nope...it's a small price to pay and the only way to staunch the flow: Take away the reason for the flow...jobs.

Correcto.............Anything Jimma says is OK is about as bad for this country as it could get!!! From the man, who single handly caused the up-coming problems with Iran. If he hadn't hung the Sha of Iran out to dry, we may not have had to deal with the nut cases that are in there now. Way to go Jimma!!!
