Nobody Home: Santorum Tries To Cover His Tracks On Residency
Pittsburgh Post-Gazette ^ | 5/26/06

Posted on 05/26/2006 1:46:14 PM PDT by steve-b

Before every election, the Post-Gazette routinely sends letters to the candidates seeking material for the Voters Guide. Back in March, as part of that process for the primary, the newspaper sent a letter to Rick Santorum at his home address, at least the one that he claims. Back from Penn Hills came the letter with a sticker from the U.S. Postal Service checked as "Not Deliverable As Addressed -- Unable To Forward."

That is all you need to know about the nasty dispute between the Republican Sen. Santorum and his Democratic opponent, Bob Casey Jr., in the November election. The whole thing is rooted in one inconvenient fact for Sen. Santorum: He doesn't live here anymore.

I'd say most politicians don't live here in America anymore.

This is the most idiotic issue I've ever seen. By law a members of Congress or the Senate must be a resident of the state they represent. As a citizen of the state of Pennsylvania, Senator Santorum is entitled to have the state of Pennsylvania pay for the education of his children just the same as any other citizen of Pennsylvania.

Sounds like between the rats and "punishers", Santorum is in extremely big doo doo.

How stupid must the Penn Newspapers believe voters are to believe this set up: "Back from Penn Hills came the letter with a sticker from the U.S. Postal Service checked as "Not Deliverable As Addressed -- Unable To Forward." That is all you need to know about the nasty dispute between the Republican Sen. Santorum and his Democratic opponent, Bob Casey Jr., in the November election." All it takes is one union goon democrap in the Post Office to create this convenient crap. But will anyone ask what happens to all the mail sent to Senator Santorum's home? And the fact that there is a valid address to which one may even send Santorum mail on this street will never enter the mind of the typical democrap voter.

Doesn't "resident" mean that the Senator have a "residence", or some kind of domicile? Or is this just another example of "Good for me but not for thee" that seems to be running thru Congress like the flu?

We put millions into security for Hillary's dogs at Westchester. We have armed secret service agents stationed there in the garage---the rent on which makes Hillary's house payment , its rumored. When was the last time anyone saw Hillary or Bubba there? Do the secret service agents still walk the new dog Bill never see's./?

I think so. Tom Daschle almost screwed up when he was going to claim his house in Washington as his (multimillion dollar) residence for income tax purposes.

Well, they have a point about the fact that our "citizen legislators" are now professional politicians. My question, however, is are there any politicians outside of say maryland or virginia who actually live at "home"?

"But while he may meet the legal requirements for residency...."

In other words, even though he satisfies the legal requirements, we're still going to try to make an issue of a non-issue.

By their standards, hardly any members of Congress could be considered residents of their states.

Taking cheap-shots at Santorum again, are you?

Are you calling for Santorum's defeat at the hands of Bob Casey, Jr?

Interestingly, this was one of the key issues in Tom Daschle's defeat in 2004. He had qualified for a property tax exemption on his home in the District of Columbia by claiming that it was his permanent, full-time residence, and the folks back in South Dakota didn't look too kindly on it. For one thing, it called into question whether Daschle was legally qualified to represent South Dakota if his "permanent residence" was in D.C.

Yes. The obvious solution is to reduce the number of days Congress is in session. When they're not meeting they can't damage the country as much as they did yesterday!

Doesn't Senator Coburn of Oklahoma still maintain his medical practice, or didn't he at least have a dispute with the Senate over whether he could?

The only guy I know that uses Amtrak to go back and forth to Delaware is Joe Biden. Most lawmakers keep an apartment, home or hotel room in DC while congress is in session. Some of the multi million dollar homes of the senators make Rick Santorums home look damn near cheap. Kerry has several homes. Boston, Martha's Vineyard and a ski chalet in Colorado or whatever. We ought to start digging into the
homes of former Sen Edwards, Kerry and others. Santorum should take his kids for a bar b que over the weekend and shake hands with the slimey "Rats" that watch over his Pa.
property. Casey is campaigning on nothing. He is allowing the
dogs from moveon.org to nip at Santorums heels. It is time for Rick Santorum to address this in a manly way. What about it Rick?

I understand that. I brought up the Daschle story because the property tax abatement law in D.C. is written specifically to exclude folks like this. By taking advantage of it, Daschle may very well have made himself ineligible to serve in the U.S. Senate.

Fortunately he lost, so this interesting legal question never had to be addressed.

Some Reps (who are elected for just two years at a time) leave their families behind. Those are the ones who work from Tue-Thu so they can spend week-ends with their families.
Only a few Sens do - McCain is one. Most just don't want to leave their families behind for at least 6 years. Biden commutes.

And then there are people like hillary who don't now, and never did, live in the state they represent.

It's a fake issue, but if it works for Casey, I suppose it's worth it (to him).
